Looking At My First Xr6 Turbo

Hey Guys,

New to the forum and im looking at buying my first XR6 Turbo so just needed some info.

Looking at a BA/BF in a manual. It will be used as a daily and my drive to work and back each day is 120kms in total, half highway half city.

Ive been reading that the Turbo kicks in at 2,000rpm? So in saying that because I do alot of highway cruising will the 5 speed be ok or would the 6 speed be a better option? Dont really want the Turbo on constantly or else it will guzzle the fuel.

Im going to be putting a Liquid Injection LPG system on it, anyone using this?

Any help is appreciated.

Get a BF if you can afford it, otherwise a BA2 6 speed sedan is a good car. Dont take this as an insult but I gather you knowledge on turbos is limited?

A turbo doesnt just "kick in" at a certain RPM, it requires a certain amount of gas flow to make it work. Cruising on the Highway @ 100+kph you wont be seeing any boost. In fact if you have good throttle control its possible to rev the car to the limiter and not produce any boost.

There are a few members running Injected LPG with good results PM "worm" he's the current spokeswoman for the BBQ brigade. You should average around 12.5/13ltrs/100kms if you can control you right foot with the type of driving you'll be doing. You would see less if the car was tuned(and it will need to be tuned to get the most from the LPG system so budget for this)

Make sure you find a clean mod free unit with service history. Make sure if its got more than 70k on the clock that you get the turbo oil supply fitler replaced asap as they seem to block up between 70k and 90k on cars that have been serviced at the factory intervals.

Cheers for the info mate. Yeah your right about my knowledge of Turbo's, pretty limited. Ive always been a Expensive Daewoo man and only ever had 5 litres and LS1's but ive always wanted to try something with Forced Induction and would prefer to go down the Turbo route than Supercharge.

I would rather go for a BF, just need to factor in $5,000 for the Gas conversion and tuning and such, so will see how it goes.

So in saying the 6 speed is a better option but if I picked up a BA 5 speed then I should be right, just depends on my driving?

IMHO avoid a 5 speed at all costs. they are know to fail under stock power levels. If you want a manual go for the 6 speed

Im driving a Ba MKII with a 6 speed manual. Getting 12lt per 100km driving aprox 70 km per day,town driving kills the economy big time. I was down in the 11's when travelling 140kms a day. Its easy to stay out of boost (and easy not too ) When I am trying to be conservative I only let it rev out to 2000rpm between changes and can comfortably cruise at 60kmph in 5th cog,pop it into 6th at 80k's.
