This is true, but as you know Adam lens are available from 200 odd bucks to beyond 7000. Im not biased to Nikon, its just this particular camera has some very good features, its not hard for a new user to use, and it has lots of room to move if the user decides to take his/her photography more seriously. But as others have said there are plenty of other models that are also worthwhile.

Nikon and Canon are both good. The D7000 is a very popular camera.

It's a good idea to go into a shop and play with the model around the price range you're looking at from both camps and see which one feels better in your hand. The ergonomics and controls layout is different between the 2 and you might prefer the feel of one over the other.

Either brand will do just fine at taking the photos. It just depends which one suits you better.

I have a Canon Powershot S2IS that ive had around 5 years. Bought it for bout $700 including the parking fine I got when I picked it up.

Was never happy with the pics it took. Always seemed to have a bit of noise.

That being said I never did anything with it other than point it at the thing I wanted to photograph, half hold the button till the box turned green then press all the way till took pic. There's still buttons and dials that I've never pressed or dialed lol.

I bought it cause at the time it was getting good reviews.

I dunno, maybe Im doin something wrong but lateley my niece's iPhone 4 takes a better P&S pic.

As Adam said, go into a shop, play around with a few. See if you like how the menus navigate, how it feels to hold, what type of add ons are available and most importantly, what the pictures look like. No good buying something that someone says is sh*t hot and find out you hate the end result. Maybe a hybrid like a Sony Nex 3 or 5 could suit.
