Nice write up Phil, Are you aware of the issues with 4 pot calipers on the rear of live axle vehicles?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, nup. What issues?

Hint: When bleeding the standard ford front caliper, Remove the upper slide bolt and tilt the caliper so it is vertical, and then bleed the caliper as you did with the speed bleeder. The position of the bleed screw when the caliper is installed allows an air pocket to develop (the top of the piston bore is higher than the bleed screw)

Hence one of the advantages of the Brembo calipers. Easy access to the nipples, and they are in the right location.

EDIT: Apologises if you have already mentioned but how much where the bleeders all up?

I bought them from Jegs - http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/KeywordSearchCmd?storeId=10001&catalogId=10002&langId=-1&Ntk=all&Jnar=0&Ne=1%2B2%2B3%2B13%2B1147708&searchTerm=speed+bleeder&N=0&mkYEAR=1576988&mkMAKE=1578180&mkMODEL=1578211

They were $US9.99 a pair (I bought 12 pairs), but the postage is a killer. However, I also bought front and rear Hawk ceramic pads to make the order worth doing. Total cost, including Fedex, was $A480 (gotta just love the current exchange rate!).

The order:

..1...486...HB616Z.607....179.99...BRAKE PADS.........................179.99

..1...486...HB194Z.665....111.99...CERAMIC PADS.....................111.99

12...799...639630..............9.99....Speed Bleeder 10MM x 1.00...119.88

.................................................Handling fee...........................13.99

.................................................Fed Ex freight.........................90.98

.................................................Order total...........................516.83

For cheaper postage, buying them direct from www.speedbleeder.com is the way to go. You pay more for the bleeders ($US7.00 each individual one) but much less for postage ($US5.95). However, I did order some extra sealant and some other things direct from them on the 11th of June, which hasn't arrived yet.

Ford stopped fitting the four pots to the rear of the FPV ute because they where having issues with Pad knock off due to the flex in the axle assembly. If this happens brake pedal travel is increased on the 1st application as the pad clearance is taken up before the pads actually touches the disk, obviously this reduces braking effect

one example

Oh bugger, didn't know anything about that. Was it happening to all live axle cars or just some of them?

Would this be a solution - an anti knock-off valve? http://www.bmsc.com.au/forums/rallying-technical/507-brake-pad-knock-off.html#post5078

This.... http://www.gmpracingproducts.com.au/brakes/brake-accessory-risidual-pressure-valves.php May help,

Interesting article..... http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_knockback.shtml

Brembo "Anti Knock Back" seals.... http://www.hrpworld.com/index.cfm?form_prod_id=537,169_701&action=product

I've only heard of it happening to utes, but TBH i haven't seen 4 pot brembos on the rear of any Wagons either! :)

I would try it out and see if its an Issue, If it is the residual pressure valve would be my preferred option but getting the balance between minimal drag and minimal Knock off would be the tricky part!!

Thanks to Luke for the tip on rotating the calipers to vertical prior to bleeding the fronts! Makes it take longer fighting the caliper bolts (tiiight) but a small amount of wd40 and a bit of pipe over the end of the 15mm spanner for more torque got em loose. saw some small air bubbles exit the nipple so it was worth it!
