Hi,

I have just recently (a month ago) purchased a 2003 XR6 Turbo, and I have so far come across an issue with the coolant, in that the pipes seem to keep bursting...

The car yard is using some random garage to do the work, which I think is probably the problem...

Today, it happened again, so I thought I would take some pics of the pipe in question... its a small pipe, that attaches to two small metal pipes, it seems they go to the turbo, they are on the right hand side of the engine, near the air filter box...

The metal pipes seem to be out of alignment, which I think is the cause of the issue?

I have attached some pictures of the pipe im talking about... this is the second time its gone...

After taking the black piping off, I noticed the metal pipe has holes in it, and it looks like its rusted!! is this normal? or is the actual metal piping broken?

Also, is there even supposed to be the black piping on it? it looks like someone may have just used the black plastic piping thing to cover up something?

1. its a different piping,, suppose to look like the 1 coming out of the thermostat housing

2. not in like with eachother making it strech

3. they've made it long to cover the holes in the tube,, its only this long |-----------------------------------------|

4. clamps look too tight and look like there digging into the hose

Hey mate.

Mine line up spot on and are basically touching each other once the rubber line is fitted over the top.

Yes yours are definitely out of alignment. Check that the one on the left (which passes along the front of the motor) is clipped in correctly at the front of the motor, and if it all looks good you can carefully bend the left pipe downwards a bit so that its a bit more aligned. It looks like they are just using some generic hose to link the two together as it is much longer than the genuine rubber hose and they have done this to cover up the corroded bits in the left pipe. You can see in my photo below that the hose should stop where the metal line starts to get small again.

The fact that the hose clamp is on the part where the line has gone smaller probably means that it isn't clamping and sealing properly and that's probably why it leaks.

I'd be tempted to buy a new metal line from Ford or Coventrys and replace your one, however you have to undo it from off the turbo and that can be tricky to do if you haven't got the right tools and patience.

Yea, was wondering if it was a different pipe.

Does anyone know what would cause the metal pipe to corrode like that?

Might get a new metal piping... would need to replace the other one also, cause they are both corroded.

Took it to South Auckland Motors, and got a new metal pipe etc, and new hoses, it now looks normal now (with small black hose).

They said that the cause of it corroding was probably because the previous owner may have put just water in the coolant resivour, rather than the proper coolant.

Mine was exactly the same wheni bought it, Except the pipe was in good condition. It was just a mater of pushing the pipe back to its correct position and putting new water hose on.
