Apparently quite common mine has done it since 10,000 klms, changed to Transmax and it did nothing so I googled it and Jag have a TSB for it for these boxes which is a bottle of Transmax additive. The TBS is titled Whoop or Bark noise, apparently the E clutch or something sticks then lets go. Its real common in Jags and more of an annoyance than a fault that will lead to damage, sounds disconcerting with the pedal down though and it only happens when you get up it. Ford call it NORMAL and I would bet jag fix it in their cars I was going to ring Jag and ask if they stock the ZF additive but just haven'y gotten aroung to it yet.

Yep. I've read the TSB. It only applied to ZF's within a certain serial number ranges as it was due to the friction material used in that clutch pack during that time. The notes say to not use the additive in a trans outside the listed serial range...

"All transmissions built on line one with a serial number above 520000 as well as those built on line two with a serial number above 4100000 have the later type friction plates fitted and should not be treated with this additive."

"The additive should only be used if squawk is an issue on transmissions with serial number below the cut off numbers listed above."

The additive is called LifeGuardFluid1.

I'll report back on the weekend with my findings.

how often is everyone doing this? I have a near dead stock BF typhoon with 107000 on the clock, previous owner had the major service done at 100000; would they have serviced the ZF? should I be getting this done at my next service?

No. They would not have serviced the ZF. Saying it's "sealed for life" is a very misleading.

The common thinking on these gearboxes across all the manufacturers that use them is to service them every 60,000km.

Your Ford dealer probably won't be able to help you with it or they'll charge you a heap for the oil.

I got mine done at A&B Automatics in Dandenong South. They're an authorised service and repair agent. Very happy with their service and prices.

Like yourself I had 100,000klms on the clock so opted for a full flush, but at over 400rwks I'm thinking a filter and oil change every 25,000 might help the box last a bit longer.

Hey Adam, how did you go with the squawk issue?

Good. It still made the noise at first but it's now gone after I spent a bit of time in 3, 4 and 5 by manually shifting.

Cost me $600 all up for a full service, flush and new filter with genuine oil. They cut the old filter open and kept it to show me what was in there. The old filter and oil were in pretty good condition so I'm happy.
