I had a similar issue with my 03 BA Xr6t. Took it too fraud they diagnosed dead pcm. I did as I suggested above and worked through all the earth and power feeds. Found a loose engine earth strap and a Loose pin in one of the BEM plugs. Fixed both those issues and the fault never came back

What is a BEM plug?

Thanks

Body Electronics Module. Located under the Icc behind the tissue box. Its part of the Can Bus coms circuit in these cars.

Usually a good place too start if your getting coms errors, but a bad earth/power feed will also cause coms errors and the connections can drop out as the voltage drops due to bad earth/power

Are the ecu's failing because they sit in the engine bay where exposed to condensation and excessive heat and not behind the dash?

Apparantly they crack solder joints on the circuit board, they used to repair them, but then they would crack in another spot and buyers expecting warranty, so they have figured they do not want to deal with them anymore.

sounds like xbox lol :) I found the ecu to be abit exposed to some other makes of cars. I know when I pulled one out a of ls1 ute was in the plastic box over it so nothing could leak or sit on it.
