Policewoman acquitted of motorcyclist's death

AN off-duty police officer has been acquitted of the death of a motorcyclist in Woodend. Peta Carbonneau, of Woodend, was charged with dangerous driving causing death after the April 20, 2009, accident.

The Bendigo County Court, sitting at Ballarat, heard Carbonneau was performing a U-turn in foggy conditions when she struck the motorcyclist travelling south along Black Forrest Drive.

The 31-year-old driver died at the scene.

Carbonneau, a senior constable at Sunbury, was on her way to work when the collision occurred.

The court heard she believed she had sufficient time to perform the U-turn and was shocked when she heard an object hit her car.

She was found not guilty by a jury this morning.

This Pig does an illegal U turn over Unbroken lines. Does not even head check and kills a rider. And freeken walks away scott free. Some one who should know better. She thought she had sufficient time. To do what ? An illegal U turn. She never even looked.

Fark aint it enough for them to go around shooting people. Now they use their cars as lethal weapons. Their the arseholes who go on about idiot drivers. Driving to the conditions. Just plain wrong. Freeeken Nazi state.

What would be a fitting punishment?

She killed someone, she has to live with that. Yes she knows better and what she has done is unforgivable but im sure there are many factors taken into account when sentencing none of which have to do with her being a cop. If anything a jury would have been less forgiving. I know I would have been as like you said she knew better.

We have all done the same thing maybe even a lot worse. What would be your opinion be if you were the one that hit them? I dont think I would deserve to go to prison even if I did make a mistake considering the amount of work I do for people in my everyday life.

I agree Police do need some of their own justice from time to time but I would think this case is much more complex than just a case of a cop killing someone and getting of scott free..

Reckless driving, loss of liscence for a period of time and made to do driving course as a start?

If she didn't make the u-turn he would be alive.

Try telling the family of the person who died " oh but she knows better and is really sorry".

I think she should be punished in some way but jail is not the answer. If it happen to be my son I would want blood of course but that's not going to help anyone and like I said she has to live with this as I would.

No I don't think jail is the answer. Not for any accident. Well maybe DUI related death.

She knew the guy and was the one to inform the family. I am not so much mad at her as I am the system.

No. But if she did then it was an even worse mistake.

I just had a guy do the same to me. Maybe had a quick glance in his mirror but never turned his head. Then spun it round. I was lucky. Only forty stiches through the calf muscle. And a few big bruises.

It's called 'Human error'. Whether you're wearing a uniform or a G string and tassles, we all make them. Sometimes the consequences are zero, sometimes the consequences are horrendous. We shouldn't judge the error by the outcome. I doubt very much that she intended any bad outcome from the decision she made.

I'm sure we've all done something pretty stupid in our driving careers, only most of the time we get away with it, so I wouldn't be too judgemental.

Cars keep getting safer and safer, but they're still driven by the Mark 1 Human. Hence the need for radar collision avoidance technology. Had such a device been fitted, the accident would most likely not have occurred. Passenger aircraft have had it for years. It's about time cars (and bikes) had it too. The cost benefit argument world wide is overwhelming.
