Thanks again for taking the time to reply Dule . I live in Melbourne . Seems like most you blokes are from Sydney I think. Ill give your instructions a try , maybe with the guy who rebuilt my Auto. Im determined to get to the bottom of this. Its becoming increasingly clear that these driveline issues with XRT6's are not always straight forward to diagnose. If its a combination of 2-3 different parts then I guess that's why. Frustrating

I've highlighted some of the major problems I've seen so far, buying such a high K car with merely an RACV check (which are hopeless) is asking for trouble. Not having a go you were on the right track just next time get a trusted mechanic to fully go over the whole car no matter how much they cost.

Whats the cars history like? Sounds like it might of have a hard life, I assume you picked it up fairly cheap as there are a lot of BA's out there with less kays on them.

Stick with it, everyone will try and help you out as much as we can.

Thanks Mate... I paid $15800 , its got Premium Sound /Brakes and Leather .... As for the history .... I bought it privately off a stranger ,so who really knows . I rested all my faith in the $450 RACV check. Its good to know you guys are out there to help , you seem genuinely helpful , like one big XR6T family .. :}

Can't help you too much with the auto, but I can tell you that you should try and avoid the ford dealers for any major work if you possibly can. Even if they do the work properly they will still rip you off royally.

Clunks are one thing most of these cars have, they have a fair bit of play in the rear end. Most think it's the diff or gearbox but from what I have read here seems like the drive shafts are the more likely problem. And this is a no cost factory option that not much can be done about you just learn to drive around it, especially noticeable in manuals. Just depends how much of a clunk you have and where from.

Try taking your car to a good workshop that deals with these cars on regular basis so they can tell you if there really is a problem and if there is, what it might be.

Where do you live, maybe someone can recommend a good workshop in the area.

In the meantime try putting the car in 1st or 2nd gear medium revs and try getting on and off the gas (not too heavily) to see if you can replicate the clunk and maybe better tell where it's coming from.

jack car up ! grab the shaft, grab the uni joint, if there is any movement there then you will have some degree of clunk cos if you can do it by hand, then under huge forces from the box, it will be a lot more.. on a side note, I used to have a clunk in my xg ute, turned out to a be a flogged out diff ! just worn out ! but I don't suspect this with yours at all..

could be the exhaust thumping something underneath when you boot it, or driveline just hitting something too close that needs adjusted further away.. our brand new FG will clunk a bit of you misuse/poorly time gearchanges etc.. my EF wagon is smoother ! :buttonit:

ok sounds like good common sense advice . Thank you

Mate, :buttonit: to the site.

Yes we are here to help you out with the right advice as many have been there and done it before, so you can save a lot of money and pain by asking before acting.

As for your problems, yes these cars have a fair amount of backlash from the driveline from brand new, so 131,000km will only make a bad example worse.

Take the car to a diff/driveline specialist. They will be able to measure the backlash and tell you how much it will cost to fix. As others have said, NEVER take your car to Ford for work as they will grease up the pole and bend you over. They also suffer an accute case of NFI when it comes to diagnosis of problems.

I am sure that some Melbourneites will be able to point you to a good driveline specialist and workshop in your area that will look after your car and not rip you off.

what diff bush did you have fitted .

has anyone tried re setting your auto tune or a custom tune might be in order to smooth out the shift patterns of the auto

another hint don't nail it in 4th gear ,4th is not designed to handle heavy torque loads ,it may be slipping a little before it drops gears hence the bang

Thanks Mate , I appreciate the welcome .... this site is really impressing me ... so much help, love it. I have a better understanding of the situation now . Now im begginning to wonder if rebuilding my auto was really necessary , wow that's a painful thought , but it is definately smoother now , but seems there is another reason. How can a brand new car come out of the factory with driveline backlash though' ? My stepfather owns the gayest car ever , Hyundai Grandeur , auto , but at least there is no backlash lol --

Cheers m8 --

No idea which diff bush was fitted , I had an agreement with the guy I bought the car from that he would fit it, he was a mechanic incidently ! , which made me suspicious why he was selling it but unfortunately I literally just fell in love with the car, reminded me of repurcussions ive suffered doing the same thing with girls ,falling for the hot/mischevious ones and getting burnt , damn lol . I had the diff bush checked and the diff itself from the guy who rebuilt my auto and he confirmed it was done. Im guessing it was the cheapest . When the auto is run in im taking it to get it tuned, they mentioned what you said about smoothing out the shift patterns , so its reassuring to hear it from someone else that they were not pulling my leg. And any speed over about 60-70 and the auto is in 4th , I cant believe your saying your not meant to nail it in that zone ? So I should only hammer it from a standing start ? that sounds depressing ! lol

no push it over to the left so it's in sports mode , then nail it will take the pressure off 4th.

I recently had a nolathane diff bush put in and to take it out and replace it with the super pro comfort one much better , plus the nolathane ones require the fitter to cut the bolt to length it's easy to stuff up , well they stuffed mine .

I bought the super pro bush and factory bolt from ford and it defiantly improved.

but your problem does sound more trans related.

I would get it tuned as soon as possible first to see if it is the shifts in the trans.

Thanks mate. All this advice is helping me narrow it down. Ive nearly run in my rebuilt auto , I take it back to the place that rebuilt it soon so they can recheck it and change the trans oil again/check for leaks. Then ill get him to look at the Tailshaft and after that im taking it to get tuned and an airbox mod and the guys there will look at the shift patterns. Im gettting closer to having the car just the way I want it. Hope all the effort and time is worth it cos if I cant fix the clunk it will really, really annoy the #**# outa me . :)

Im on a journey , 10 months so far , to fix THIS STUPID BA DRIVELINE DIFF CLUNK BACKLASH WHATEVER IT IS . I live in Melbourne . Does anybody know someone trustworthy and skilled that deals with this problem ? The diagnosis is the hardest part it seems , according to an astounding array of prefessionals in the field, EVERYTHING IS OK . But its not !!! Otherwise it wouldnt feel like a small bomb gets exploded from underneath my car when im sitting in auto mode(4th) , 60 -70 klms per hour and I floor it, drops to second or first , and Bang ! Once I nearly needed chiropractic treatment after a vicious clunking !! Also low speed knocks too . Whats the best aftermarket option for replacing diff , bushes ? Tailshaft . Seems to be a DESIGN FLAW.So why replace factory bits that are badly engineered in the first place. ? Which is the best page in this forum to read re this issue ? cos I know its an old one.Ive rebuilt my auto , new rear diff bush also , and reset to factory shift patterns. ... so far ... and still CLUNK ! ING ME TO TEARS.

Try northern diffs. If it a diff or auto problem they will be able to tell you and give you a price before they fix it. There is some type of relationship with blue power so the know ford petty well.
