What Has Happened To My T ?

I had my car in getting the exhaust studs fixed last week. The guys in the workshop said that a couple of studs had fallen right out!

They had to take the turbo and exhaust manifold off and replace a few studs.

It is a fairly common problem AFAIK.

Anyway, since I got the car back, I hear it spooling louder, and even distinct fluttering that I never heard before.

It is totally a stock BFII T with standard intake and air filter.

It goes like a cut snake now and traction control cuts in in the dry in 1st and 2nd easy. Maybe in 3rd too but I haven't had enough room to test it!

I took it into the workshop with exhaust noise - Now I have problems with axle tramp LOL!

Any ideas what these guys could have done?

(BTW, I use Caltex 98 and have no pinging)

they may have either knocked or left off the actuator hose

I thought I would loose boost with a leaky hose?

Whatever.

Damn! It sure feels good.

I suppose melted pistons or a blown engine will be the eventual result it is left as is :greyscare:

It's back in the workshop now getting checked - I knew it was too good to be true.

Not if the line thats missing is the one that delivers boost pressure too the wastegate actuator. Without this your relying on exhaust back pressure too open the valve and as you have found out, that doesnt really happen :)

Sounds to me like the car simply was driving poorly beforehand - maybe you just aren't used to how the car feels now that its been fixed?

My (also mostly stock) T breaks traction in first and second (even with 160K on the clock), so I'm not really sure why that's an issue - all Ts should do that?!

As for the noise, well my turbo has whined/fluttered since day one, so I'm not sure you will have engine issues either. The workshop guys though know best of course!

Mines tuned, but I saw a jump from 13 to 21psi after a few shoddy silicon joiners were replaced.. I think you have gotten use to the lazyness and now its all fixed it feels lik a diff car.. But yea get it checked out just to be safe..

I got it back from them tonight after they checked and rechecked.

It still goes like a rocket!

It has never felt as quick - not even in the first month after picking it up.

It's a company car and consequently, I've never bothered finding out exactly how boost is regulated or where all the little hoses go!

I see how that all works now. Potentially very nasty - but there is no pinging and it is running smooth as so far. The workshop checked it over today.
