The engine light came on but when tried to read the code with the flash tuner, there was no code there and the light had already gone out.How do I test the stock coils and is there any replacement aftermarket alternative that is a better option, what spark plugs work for people and what is the appropriate gagap is there anything else I should be looking at?Car has tune, 15psi, fuel pump, injectors, cooler pipes, dump pipe and cacatchers any help appreciated Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/74499-ignition-breaking-down/ Share on other sites

Borrow a set off a mate and go for a spin. If all is well start replacing his with yours one at a time until the misfire returns and then replace the dud coil with a new one. Or once you have worked out if its the coils buy a brand new set off ebay for $150. Just re-gap the .9 plugs to .8 and they will be fine.Good point FPV6T if your fuel filter hasnt been changed, its well overdue at 90K. It's a bit of a pain in the ass makes me think easier replacing the whole lot rather than pulling piping and that top cover with it's rear most bolt I cannot get to easily! You need a 1/4 inch socket hex and rachet for the rear bolt. My piping is a bit of work to get on and off haha, thanks for the replies somfar Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/74499-ignition-breaking-down/#findComment-1099984 Share on other sites

There may also be a white track/trace marks down the side of the coil leg where its been breaking down. 09sr5 Member 56 Member For: 14y 8m Posted 27/04/11 10:52 PM Author Share Posted 27/04/11 10:52 PM Ok I have success!Changed the coils and plugs again! and car still was the same. I started looking at other things and decided to check the cat. Oh hello metal part inside the cat hs blown down and become wedged sideways against the rear o2 sensor... pulled the sensor out and with a screwdriver through the hole managed to push the guts of the cat back up and then using a wire with a hook pulled it back up and out of the exhaust pipe.So its all good...My next question is what are the concequences of running no cat for a while till I get a new one?Car runs REAL well now hahaha Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/74499-ignition-breaking-down/#findComment-1100707 Share on other sites
09sr5 Member 56 Member For: 14y 8m Posted 27/04/11 10:55 PM Author Share Posted 27/04/11 10:55 PM I tested the coils for resitance, I didnt really know what I was looking for, 5.38 ohm across theprimary and secondary and .12 ohm primary to ground. would be interesting if someone has a dead coil that could measure.
