Hi all

im looking at getting my first xr6 turbo. Being thru the forums looking at differences between BA and BF and realise BF has alot of improvements.I have been looking for last 2 months at privately advertised cars and they vary drastically in condition. There are alot of thrashed our heaps of crap out there asking top dollar

Iam torn between a BA xr6t made in aug 2003 with 60,000kms, 1 owner and in very good condition and really stands out from others.I have negotiated down to $14,250 over last week with him. Car is only 50 kms from me and never moddded and reason for sale is he bought a new X5 BMW which I believe him. However according to log book it has been services at 7000, 30,000 and 59,000, so lloks like servicing isnt up to scratch

The second one is a 2005 BF xr6t. 125,000kms, always serviced by ford and has log books. Car is in Qld and iam in adelaide so I need to factor in $1500 for air fares and car transport. He wont budge on $15,500. Its pre 06/06 so realise it wont ave the typhoon bottom end. Iam a bit worried about all the cheaps ones in QLD ive seen recently thinking maybe to do with floods who knows.

I know from the forum the BA will need DBA front rotors eventually whereas the BF already has the premium brakes and the BF has the awesome ZF trans. Iam looking at it as as daily driver and I do 30,000kms per year and also looking to mod to 300rwkw for the occasionaly thrash. Will be 90% used to commute around the metro ares.

I also realise the BA 4 speed has a limit of around 300rwkw and has a weaker bottom end.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!!

I would choose the Bf if you do that many kms, better fuel economy and won't need to build the trans.

Although a BA with low kms is still a nice car, the 4 speeds are still good to drive but the long 1st gear makes them slow off the line standard. The brakes in the Bf will need replacing eventually soon but you'll save 700-900 on valve springs too.

Flights to bris are about $99, take cash and drive it home, probably only $400 in fuel.

Tough one mate. You've got a few extra things to consider there. 300rwkw reliably from either of these (especially the BA) is going to take mods which = off the road and this will be your everyday drive. 30k a year also is going to flog anything out pretty quickly especially if she's already starting from a high base. IMO, the Qld car is out and I wouldn't buy a BA - period. You see this all the time. We want a strip animal but need it to get to work everyday - the two don't really mix. Most second hand T's are half flogged out to start with, unless it's one of the rare ones.

There are some nicely modded T's getting around if you look hard enough. All of which, my car included, will never get their money back on the cost of the mods = your gain. IMO, this is your best go and in BF. If I find anything I'll send you a PM. Cheers, Bomber.

thanks for your replys guys. Yeah I was thinking the Ba because of the kays I do but everyone says the BF is much better. It seems these cars take ages to sell at the moment too. Maybe I should aim for less rwkw. Every dyno place ive been to are like" you need minimum 300-330 rwkw otherwise its theres is no point bla bla bla" They might be telling people that so they can blow stuff up and go back to them to fix it.

Im not raelly concerned about the 0.5litre difference in fuel econmy between ba and bf because a cappa tuner will reduce that and im also going to put it on injected gas. It does concern me if the BA has a really long first gear as I like to be quick off the mark in city traffic. Adeliade performance engineers have a BA demo car which has been running on LPG 350rwkw for past 5 years and I have read alot about it and now been for a run in it.

Be prepared too spend big $´s on suspension on any 125k km old B Seres. The majority of bushes will be worn/sloppy as will the shocks. If you factor this cost into the decision you´ll probably find it´l cover 1/2 your horse power mods.

thanks, yes have to agree with you there, all the xr6ts I have driven around 130 - 150kms had slightly more vague steering and knocking suspension as shocks would be stuffed. that's another reason why the low km BA im looking at relly stood out as well

If you can get a independant inspection on any used car. I was in the same situation as you are in now. I wanted a BF but after looking for 6 months and every BF I got inspected had issues, either been modded or just a lot of small problems and the fact most wanted mid 20k mark for them. ( I was looking at cars no more that 80,000kms ) I stumbled upon a BA MKII that was a 1 owner sunroof 65000 klms serviced every 7,500kms and the same shop that had inspected all the cars I had looked at advised me to buy it ( which I did) as it was in faultless condition mechanically, body and interior and was a very good price. He advised me a good BA is better than a dodgey BF. And this is from a Tuner who is a sponsor.

Yeah just basic mods, intercooler, high flow cat, typhoon intake, 42 or 60lb injectors, walbro pump, valve springs if needed, boost controller and custom cappa tune . Im guessing 280 -300rwkw.

Who nows ill probably be happy with 260rwkw after coming from a mitsubishi 380

Mine goes in for a tune in July, tuner said he should get 290-300 rwkw with the same mods that you have stated. Its a big difference standard between a Mitsubishi 380 and a XR6T. I came from a 380 VRX.
