I believe they use Valvoline oil at my local Ford Dealer - whether that's good or bad - I don't know. Yes the 48 bucks also included an oil filter for a big $8.72 !

The Mobil oil that I'm using is SynthS 15W-50W. What brand of oil is the 10W-60W that your using?.

Castrol Formula R 10w/60

Is that also fact that once you start using fully synethic you shouldn't go back to fully mineral oil or even a blend ?

No. It will have very little effect at all, obviously a reduction in oil performance and possibly a slightly higher wear rate, but nothing major.

Considering cost of synethic, is it possible to stay with a mineral or blend oil with out detriment to the donk ?

Absolutely. The benefits of synthetics are primarily performance related. Synthetics have better resistance to oxidation (oil turning balck or "cooking"), also have better wear capabilities under arduous conditions like performance driving and towing. They also generally have a better chance of "staying in grade" with regard to viscosity, over a longer period of time.

All in all, if you intend to keep the car for a long time and would like to look after it, then most of the synthetic blends or full synthetic products will provide better wear and better oil drain performance than standard mineral oils.

Having said that, if all you require is normal type performance and you maintain the vehicle according to the recommendations, I.e. 15000kms or 6 months, then any reputable API SJ or SL, preferably also with the ACEA A3/B3 spec, will do the job.

Hey guys, I know this thread has stopped for a while now, but I just had my 3000km peace of mind service done. I also requested an oil change. I asked the service guy if they use fully synthetic oil, and he said it was a part synthetic oil.

From what I can understand on this thread, the part synthetic oil should be fine. On the invoice it says the oil was Castrol XT10W30. I tried to look it up on the Castrol web site but could not find any information on it.

DavoWA, does the use of this oil seem fine? As you have said in your threads, I have not been shy of the right foot, but I have not been thrashing it. I actually used the running in procedure as recommended by a person from FPV on these forums (sorry I can't remember his name).

Cheers

Rob

Thanx Cro :)

Hows it going man? You must be bored at work or do you normally send messages on the forum while at work :)

Do you know what oil they put in yours at the 3000km service?

I'm never on here at work

Or not that my boss can see :D

They put in some Shell Helix Fully Synthetic oil at 3000kms when I asked for mineral.

Then another dealer put in some Caltex Mineral oil at 10,000 when I asked for Synthetic.

I've given up requesting a specific oil, just let the dealer do it for me.

I never get what I ask for anyway!

Rob,

Whilst XT 10w/30 is fine as a product, it is not what is recommended for these vehicles. It is a straight mineral oil, designed for engines requiring low viscosity oils, including the AU and C***dore engines. The product won't do you any damage, but the recommendation is for a 15w/40, and I use a synthetic 10w/60 myself, but I feel that the 10w/30 may be a bit to light for these engines.

Time will tell, but I would suggest that you change back to a 15w/40 or better next change. Just check your oil consumption to make sure you're not using too much.

Agree with DavoWA, the correct oil as per pg 34 of the “Customer Assistance, Warranty And Service Guide BA Series” service logbook is 15W/40.

Here's an extract of an email I sent to Ford Aust Customer Service the reply:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your reply.

Using Castrol 10W-30 is ok, however we suggest to replace this oil with 15W-40 in approximately 5000kms due to the oil now in your vehicle being a lighter grade and thinner quality, and replacing it with a thicker grade.

As to Brand Name's of Oils, Ford Australia does not recommend any particular brand, just as long as it is a reputable brand.

We hope this helps.

Subject: RE: BA Falcon XR6T Enquiry

Nicolas

Thanks for your reply.

Is Castrol GTX3 10W-30 suitable? And which type of oil in the Castrol range is suitable?

The reason I forward this query to Ford Motor Co, is because the Service Dept of dealership were not helpful.

Thanks

Dear

Thank you for your email to the Ford Customer Relationship Centre.

We can advise that the Engine Oil Specification for the Falcon XR6 Turbo is SAE 15W-40. This is for optimum fuel economy.

We suggest if you have any further enquiries to contact your local Ford Dealership.

According to the Castrol website the GTX3 is a 15W-40 oil not 10W-30, from what I can see Castrol don't actually make a 10W-30. Their Magnatec is 10W-40 and Formula R Synthetic is 10W-60 these are the only oils that come close to 10W-30.

Another fact you might be interested in is that the FPV (not sure about Ford cars) cars have changed from Mobil oil to Castrol oil from the factory.
