Well guys.. changed my oil today... 4 and a half thou. k.. thought discretion was the better part of valour, and changed the lot.. oil and filter. The only 15w 40 oil I could find was the GTX3 castrol, which is the oil grade recomended by the manual. Its good to get rthe hands dirty again!!!!

Sheesh. I clocked up my first 3000km in less than two weeks, I seriously just "cant get enough of this". Anyways, she is in the shop today and I have requested filter and oil change. I am pretty sure they are putting in Castrol Magnatec, as I know nothing about oils, could some one please advise me if this is mineral or synthetic? And is this ok for the engine so early on?

Cheers.

I had my oil changed the other day and my Ford dealer also used Castrol Magnatec.

Here is some more info about Castrol Magnatec.

Curiously the owners manual reccommends 15W-40 but Magnatec is 10W-40. GTX-3 and Shell Helix Super City are both 15W-40. Reading the above specs for Magnatec I would say it is a better oil, especially if you are going 10-15,00km between oil changes.

Hey guys, as I mentioned in an earlier comment, if you use a product that is API SJ or SL and ACEA A2/B2 or A3/B3, you will have no problems. ACEA A3/B3 is better performance.

The products mentioned in the thread are fine, however I believe the ten/tenths Penrite is part synthetic like BP Visco 5000, Shell Helix Ultimate, Castrol FMX or Magnatec FMX (both are dealer only oils - no retail packs), full synthetic products like the Castrol Formula R 10w/60 and the Mobil 1 15w/50 are also good. Do not worry so much about the viscosity, just don't use 0w/xx or 5w/xx as the engine will turn into a Gen III.

Castrol Magnatec is a Mineral Oil, but has a unique additive system as I mentioned earlier in the thread, which makes it better for cold start wear performance.

Feel free to ask any questions you like, I will give unbiased answers always.

Interesting 'oil's ain't oils' discussion...

On this topic, what do people think of addatives like the Neulon range of teflon products. They basically teflon coat the guts of your beast reducing wear. Not to be added until after 20,000kms so the motor is well and truly bedded in.

I used it in my Nissan Patrol but who know if it made a difference?

This is really a good site (my 1st post).

I'm looking at an XR6 for my next car and have to convince the other half that the extra money & insurance costs are worth it for the turbo

Mac they certinally are (for the TURBO that is).

To play safe it is worth the extra to get the oil and filter changed I feel, although at $129 for the change by my dealer (labour cost was the reason) I would do it myself if I was you. The factory fill with the turbo is a mineral oil , so I refilled at 3k with mineral, and change again at 7k (filter as well) as I intend on keeping the car for 5 years or more.

I'm bloody confused by what is being said in this thread when compared to what the Ford Service Manager of a very large dealership told me (they sell 150 BA's each month).

I was introduced to him when I first picked-up my T. I questioned him over the oil & change interval.

He said that if it was his car he would change the oil & filter at 5,000 then as per scheduled services. Well that's all OK.

Where I'm confused is over the oil.

He stated that the XR6T is delivered factory filled with Castrol Magnatec as a 50/50 blend synthetic/mineral oil. I questioned this, & was informed that the Magnatec is avail either as fully synthetic, fully mineral, and as 50/50.

Also said to continue with 50/50 no matter how many changes I do, until the 15,000 oil change when I should then go fully synthetic.

Anyone know if all this is bull?
