Hey all,

I've just bought a BA xr6T with 170,000km's on the clock and have a budget of 14-15k on it so its ready for once I get off P's in September.

Let me know what you think because iv only ever had Holden's for my P plate years so buying a Ford required alot of research.

anywho my mods in mind were:

6 speed gearbox from Mal Woods with opt2 clutch --approx 6000

exhaust system from my local neighbourhood shop including 4' dump, 4' hi flow cat and 3 1/2" cat back---1950

valve springs

injectors

tune (3 tune option)

waste gate sprng( actuator)

the grand total so far is 11,350.

I was wondering, is there anything im missing? I know I should just get a new engine but its only just out of the price range as I was planning to get a fg typhoon short block put in but that's 5000 by itself and I thought I should just get used to the power I have to begin with then slowly step it up. also on the cards are new intercooler piping ( bigger) and a intake plenum but yeh ill do that at the same time as the bottom end.

the turbo was reco'd last year and im thinking bout just getting an assortment of supply line replaced as apparently they rnt great and maybe TB relocation and gauges so I know whats happening with the different pressures etc but im really looking for advice here cuz im fumbling in the dark with a engine I only half know so id love some feedback.

thanks in advance for your time hope you like my plans!

(ps been looking at some threads on here and far out I think the car has got a way to go to compare to some on here lol)

Hi mate,

If you have $15K to spend on the car, you could indeed get a new engine. Atomic engines are about as good as they get I hear so have a look at this link mate - It'll put it in perspective for you. Maybe only a short for the time being, but you could stretch for a long. If you're gonna go to the effort of doing all this - Best to do it right I say.

At 170,000 the engine, turbo and car components will be getting 'tired'

If I were you, I'd be looking into also upgrading;

Suspension - Sway bars etc

Possibly turbo wastegate mods

You will want a brake upgrade - DBA4000's are a good start with Bendix ultimates

Your exhaust/IC and piping/Intake and exhaust will also need attention

Gearbox strengthen/rebuild

Dyno tune/Injectors and XCAL flash box

What power level are you chasing? What do you want the car to run at the drags? Just remember every time you make changes to the car you will need to have it dynoed. Therefore it's best to try and get most of it done at once :spoton:

ATOMIC ENGINES;

Hope that helps out mate :) I'm hoping to mod an FG in the next year so I look forward to seeing how this develops for you!

Oh, and Welcome! :icon_ford:

Unless youre hellbent on doing the buildup yourself id be inclined to think that selling yours and buying a later model already modified car with the extra cash would be the most cost effective way to go and youll probably end up with a better car at the end??

Hey NVT thanks for taking the time to reply and the link, those blocks are off their nuts...

the suspension and brakes have been seen to as it was a condition of me buying the car and I was planning to get a new wastegate and BOV when I do the lump of work to it :)o and the tailshaft is a forgie too so I dont need to worry bout that.

yeh those engines are bout 7000 with exchange but that's not fitted is it? that seems to be the cost of the built block as they dont say anything about dyno run in etc etc so im guessing the overall cost to put one of those beauties into my car would be around 10 grand+ and I still need to change the exhaust and get a new manual gearbox+ clutch as the 5speed wont last long. with a budget of 14 or so and exhaust+box+mescellaneous making it to 11 I thought the only real valid way to make the engine healthier is to buy a FG typhoon shortblock and put that in without touching my heads (non reco but a valve and injector change) cuz iv been qouted that for 5000.

so its either

exhaust

valves

injector

gearbox

tune

some piping or TB relocation

14k around

OR

exhaust

valves

injector

gearbox

tune

and new shortblock

16-17k

its all about money :(

plus I really want the plenum haha

hey JZXR6T,

your probably right in most cases but most 06/06+ cars iv been interested in are above the 16k+ mark and are around 100,000km's+

I got this car for 7,000 with nearly everything that could go wrong in a xr6t alredy looked at to make sure it doesnt. so with a gearbox and exhaust it should be close to a new car mechanically, not to mention if I get the shortblock etc

o and its hard to find really decent ones under 20k so I just thought to do it all along the way so that way I know a bit more aboutt he car aswell, cuz I love to learn lol

Well mate,

Another thing you need to answer is this - What will you use the car for? What do you want it to be capable of?

Track work?

Quarter mile time?

A streetable Turbo?

Those atomic engines are really amazing from what I hear. If I were you, I'd fire off an email to Chris at Rapid and see what he can do.

Where are you located?

Lots of shops can get Atomic stuff shipped to them - You just need to see how much install and such will be on top of it.

Short Engine - $8,000 exchange

Rapid do an Xcal/Injector/Tune package - $1,400

Exhaust - X-force full system - $1,800 installed

Valve springs - Atomic HD springs - $400 + Install but should be easy to install with the engine transfer

Gearbox - $6,000

That's $17,600 - Say $18,00 for everything fitted and installed (Adding on a bit for the springs, but still unsure on the block)

Or you can go down the other path;

F6 short block - $5,000

Gearbox - $6,000

Rapid Intercooler/piping/battery relocation/air intake - $2,200 (Maybe a V3 kit?)

Fuel Pump - $200

Injectors/Tune/XCAL - $1,400

Valve springs and fit - $800

Exhaust - $1,8000

That's a total of $17,400

So that's two paths you can go mate, depending on what you want.

Let us know what you think.

Dan

And by the way mate,

Atomic do run-in their engines :spoton:

Just need a dyno tune along with your mods.

"Precision blueprinting and assembly of short motor

Supply detailed specs of completion of engine and run-in procedure sheet

24 months warranty"

I think either option will suit you, but you'll have to do a little more research :icon_ford:

Geez Dan thanks tons for researching for me I wasnt expecting it :D

most of the qoutes iv recieved have been a bit more then those you quoted, dunno if its because im in Brisbane and your in WA so the shops vary slightly but yeh cant really go above 14 or 15, for the time being, as I have a wedding to pay for aswell lol yeh I mainly want it for street use as im am nearly finished studying to be a police officer probably best not to hoon on the streets so track will be my haven of enthusiastic driving.

im probably going to do the majority of the work needed around the engine then wait a few years and then do the short engine, probably from atomic or Nizpro, then up the boost even more.

so keeping the same engine block im planning to

6-gearbox+clutch

2-exhaust

3-tune+injector+valves, my quotes are a bit higher then yours :(

3 left over for some piping, the plenum, fuel pump, actuator and some supply lines etc

and might look around for surge tanks too so I dont have to do that later

and that will keep me in my budget :D

again though, thanks so much for looking things up for me and ill keep you posted as I do it so you have some good idea's too

I wont be spending any ony on the engine till september as I will be then selling my current car then getting off p plates and driving the ford.

thanks again

yeh 3000 for the shortblock by itself supplied but 5000 to rip mine apart, put the heads on the new shortblock, change all the fluids then dyno run the new engine in etc 5000 is drive in drive out so its not too bad considering other place ask more for the same thing
