Ok so a friend of a friends mechanic offered to service my 4spd gearbox on my 03' BA xr6T when it hit 90km. Little did I know he was a crook and took my money without servicing it!! This was ages ago, fast forward to 140km later and the gear box of course let go from lack of service.

Cut a long and expensive story short, we ended up replacing the box with a second hand one.

The car has had a custom tune from CV Performance which was done over 3 years ago.

The new/second hand box was going fine for a short while then it started playing up. Only on hot days, the gear box would slip between drive and neutral at low speeds, around 20-50km/h. Very strange I thought.

I dont drive it often now but I decided to take it for a fang on the weekend, it was pretty hot, about 36 degrees. It started slipping again so I took it back home, after I stopped in the driveway and it was idling away, it started to run very very rough, like it was on 5 cylinders!

I let it cool and tried to start it the next day, same thing, revs all over the place and still very rough. Seems undrivable.

Any ideas?

Hey mate,

Sorry to hear about that... It sounds like you may need a new box, BUT there is a slight chance it may just need a proper service.

I have a BA T with the 4spd as well. It was running a pretty crappy tune that had horrid boost spike that was really bad for the box.. Anyways, long story short, it began flaring every now and then and then it would slip from first into neutral. Got really bad one day so I practically rolled it home and parked it while I organised for the box to be rebuilt.

My mechanic recommended a trans shop nearby and I took the car in, expecting the worst. I left it with him for 3 days - He serviced the box, tightened all the bands and road tested the car, plus he ran diagnostics on it. For 3 days he couldn't find one issue with the car - And I'm happy to say that it hasn't missed a beat since...

These boxes are very VERY sensitive to fluid type and fluid levels. My suggestion is to get the box serviced and the bands tightened - Also get it run on a diagnostic. They will know if it needs a build - More damage = a bigger bill if it does need a rebuild.

The service should cost you between $200 and $300 I'd say. And if that works it's a hell of a lot better than $2,500+...

Hope that works out mate - Let us know how it goes :spoton:

Hi Mercury,

The shop I went to was called "Precision automatic transmissions" in Osbourne Park. Dealt with a fellow called Ian and in all honesty I could not have been happier with the customer service or the work done. Literally has not missed a beat, and coming from numerous sources saying I'd need a rebuild, I could not have been more pleased!

You after a rebuild or just a good service?

Cheers Dan... good info mate!

Gearbox is good, just slip / flaring whatever you call it 2nd to 3rd change under WOT... may just need a good service or it could be the clutches are worn.

Will drop in there next time I'm out that way during the week! See what he thinks. Maybe able to do some preventative maintence before the whole box goes :nyyaah:

Hey I think I see your car now an then in the carpark near Canning vale Dome... got the forum sticker on the front window?

Oh... OP, sorry about the thread hijack!

In the 4 spd, low fluid level is a cause for these problems... Get under there and check for leaks, with 140 thou, you are guaranteed to have at least one, usually its the pump seal that gets chewed out by the bushing...

Hey Mercury,

Yep that's me :spoton: I work at the music school in the group of shops above dome - Now I know there's another forum member around, I better wash my car more often!

Ian is great, I'm sure he'll work everything out with you. I really hope that it turns out to be nothing more than a little maintenance and a good service :drinks:

Let us know how it turns out mate,
