Its a restriction because the factory twin 2.25 drops down to 1.75 inside the center muffler. Biffed mine in favour of a pair of 2.5 resonators. Its there to keep the drone down.

Just an update to this post. I had my car completely checked after the muffler/s removal and everything is fine (as I suspected).

The EFI/Tuner specialist agreed that backpressure is definately "the enemy" for any turbo, and that after the cat any exhaust changes would cause minimal effect, if at all. Removing the mufflers and only running twin resonators hasn't negatively changed my car or how it drives, nor give any significant extra power. What it has done is make it sound fantastic though IMO - which was my sole aim to start with.

The sound is more like a (quiet) race car noise under the throttle and backing off, and with a nice deep idle - not like a truck at all, thanks to the resonators I would think. It is no where near loud enough to worry me or the police, despite what people have said in other threads. Think about what your car actually needs - does it really need mutliple large mufflers to quieten an already quiet car?? If you want a quiet car, then no worries but then why buy a cat-back?.

Rudiger - I very much take your point up above and agree mostly, it is very much personal preference and people will have opinions. But I would rather get the best result possible based on turbo engine basics regardless of what bits I use, than worry about what has Ford used previusly (to keep the car quiet) or what Joe Bloggs the battler at an exhaust shop says.

Anyway, for others wanting a simple change that sounds awesome, give this a go before spending money on a cat-back. I don't think you will regret it. Cheers.

Just punch the cat through then yr car will breath, leave the cat's in there original position but punch them through, which average copper is gonna know that there punched & how many times has an EPA inspector pulled u over for a random emissions test, think about it. :3gears:

only problem about beltin out the cat isnt the epa pullin you over for a random inspection, its the overboosting problem you will have and the major damage that can be done to the motor

CBXRT,

I'm chasing a similar setup to what you mentioned (resonators and Centre muffler deletion) but I will be going with a high-flow cat and tune. I'm just having trouble convincing a local shop of what I want.. They seem to think resonators are for noise supression only??

You wouldn't have any pictures of what the resonators inserted into the exhaust look like or something?

Cheers mate,

I quite like my setup and there is no drone with it. Im running the Xforce 4" dump with high flow cat going into twin 2.5" pipes which then has the redback twin 2.5" pipe centre and rear straight through mufflers. Not saying you couldn't get the same sound with other combinations but its hard to know.

The ute is quiet as just ticking along and normal driving but has a nice note associated with it. But when you put ya foot in it, it sounds awesome some mates have said race car sound. Definitely has that typical 6T sound you get with supras and skylines but a little nicer. No drone or tractor/truck noise either.

I searched youtube listening to different clips and settled on the redback after hearing it and knowing it was what I like as opposed to the full xforce setups. My xforce piece is stainless and redback is mild steel.

Cheers mate,

12" long (hot dog) or similar will fit where the center muffler is.
