If you run a stock in tank pump to feed the surge tank wouldnt the stock pump still provide enough fuel to cruise around with despite the busted main pump giving the same risk as running 2 044's?

The car may run but not correctlty and will run lean.

Normally the intank pump pumps to the fuel rail which has a pressure regualtor fitted to control rail pressure, when a surge tank is fitted, the pump now pumps to the surge tank and any excess fuel will flow back to the fuel tank, there is no pressure control at this point. The only way pressure will build is from the retsriction on the return side, this restriction will be higher at low rpm and may give enough rail pressure for the engine to run, but as rpm increases and more fuel is used by the engine, rail pressure will drop because the fuel will be following the route of less restriction, which will be the return line back to the tank

We all know it's not really THAT hard to get power out of these cars but to really know what your doing, do it safely and have a good understanding of how our cars work takes quite a bit of skill and knowledge.

Not all tuners have this, the ones that do know who they are and so does pretty much everyone else...

See where I'm coming from now OP??
