You know, 1966 was the best year for everything

Though 1969 is pretty good too (year that mu sister was born and year that Omega made the Speedmaster Moonwatch!)

l have been keeping a sly eye out for a 69 Speedy for a while now as l reckon it would be neat to have one the same age as me, but l havent seen one yet. Seen plenty before and after, especially in the years 65-67. BTW the first generation moonwatch was released way back in 1957.

That's right fellow horologist, though my (incorrect?) understanding is that the '69 Speedmaster was the first time it was 'flight certified by Nasa on the Moon'

Regardless it's still a wicked piece of Swiss automatism!

Thanks again for all the wishes, its nearly all over now :o l gave the GT a thrashing for you today Hawkie, ole Bloodnut just loves it ;) 4 weeks aint long.......

Plonky > Dug out one of my Omega books which confirmed that the Speedy was first certified by Nasa for space flight in 1965 for use in the Gemini program. It was the only watch to survive a pretty tough range of tests, other watches tested were from Bulova, Rolex, Longines, Hamilton and a handful of others. The Moonwatch tag wasnt something the Omega marketing department come up with until later on as they werent even aware that the Speedy had been to the moon until well after the fact.

Now if l was to get serious about buying a Speedy the same vintage as me, the attached pic would have top be it. Omega made 1024 of these in 1969 to commerate Apollo 11, solid 18k gold. Quite rare but not impossible to find :o
