im having spark issues, plugs are good (and have tried a new plugs etc), so im thinking it could be coilpacks.

what are my options with coilpacks to suit the 4L?

are the factory (visteon) ones still the best bet? or have aftermarket coilpacks now been developed?

Go factory Tocchi, Dont be afraid too price them up at your local Fraud dealer. Last time i did they came in the same as the fleabay pricing + postage.

Whats the issue you have weak spark? or the usual coughing and farting at idle?

ok awesome. wasnt sure if MSD or similar do a coilpack I could retrofit or something.

basically, we have these...

195psi in each 6 cylinders,

20 deg of timing

good oil pressure,

good fuel pressure,

tried 2 sets of spark plugs, one being the factory Iridiums, and the other being copper plugs,

it does the occasional bang, but just wont fire (and start up) ... but when it does backfire, its a 2m flame and people in other workshops come out because they think a car has crashed haha.

the spark is just weak, but its not the plugs, so unless im missing something obvious that ive overlooked, im looking towards coilpacks.

Mate for $150 for some coils from ebay cheapest check you can do!

Having said that when my coils were on their way out I did not experience any of what you are ATM!

Mine just broke down on top end power runs (I,.e. last 150 meter of the 1/4 mile etc...) :buttrock:

tocchi,

Don't suppose the ecu has been off the car at all?

Get the electrical system checked out. coils are earth through the ecu and and poor/missing connections affect spark strength.

Edit, is this on you race car Matt?

didnt know that... ill double check that the coils have been ground through the ecu (motec).

yeh on the capri

You need to check the impedance (resistance) of the coils and make sure they are within the range of the Motec. Factory coil wiring has a permanet earth and a switch +ve, the motec needs too be setup the same way if possible ("normally" the coils have a permanent +ve feed and switched earth)

Still using the factory crank angle sensor? They dont prduce a very strong signal and if the wiring too/from the sensor is close too any high current wiring (ie alternator or coil wiring)

Induced current can cause erratic signals and funky timing changes.

Also get the Input from the sensor check out the motec will probably need a rising edge signal and im 99% sure ford sensors are falling edge. Again this can cause erratic signals
