Buying An Fg Turbo

Hi there. I’m new on the forum and I'm looking for some information about what to look out for in a second hand FG XR6T. I'm thinking of trying to find a manual, hopefully ex-demo. Anything I should be on the look out for when I test drive these things. I drove one on the weekend and heard some noises that were a little unsettling.

The first was a pronounced clicking noise each time I released the clutch (slight feedback through the clutch peddle as well), the dealer assured me it is normal but it just seems like an odd thing to happen in a modern car. The other was a bit of a clunking noise when engaging the clutch in reverse. Should either of these two sounds be happening or is there likely to be something wrong with the car?

It's an ex-demo so warranty shouldn't be an issue but Ford isn't noted for its customer service so I'd like opinions from people who know their turbos. I'd like to drive a few more to get a better idea but finding them in manual is proving a bit difficult.

Hoping a few people here can enlighten me about the FG.

Cheers

I have an FG XR50T, and get the same "Clunking" in reverse when engaging/diesngaging clutch.....

Also have a noise while in Neutral, and had it looked at at the 1000km inspection and told it was "Normal for this gearbox" though I will be complaining at the 15k service again....

Thanks

When depressing the clutch pedal the clicking noise you are referring to sounds like the reverse lock out solenoid.

Try this.

With the ignition on depress the clutch and then release it. If you hear the clicking sound, that will be the reverse lockout solenoid. perfectly normal.

The slight clunk you are referring to when engaging reverse may be a sign of slight synchro wear.

If it worries you, ask them to change the gearbox oil to a synthetic fluid and ensure they use 4.85L of oil and not what is written in the owners handbook as that figure is for the V8 model and not the I6.

So that clicking is normal everytime you depress and release the clutch peddle? Who designed that I wonder. It wouldn't be too much of an issue if it weren't so loud. I could hear the clicking at 3000-4000rpm with the windows down, admittedly not going freeway speeds but still a bit disappointing.

I think the clicking is due to the clutch passing a switch or something?

you shouldn't be able to hear it at 3000-4000 rpm though I wouldn't think, I cant in mine

Mine clicks too, but ive noticed it only does it when a gear is under load, like in 1st slowing using engine braking and then depressing the clutch or when the car is off and being held by first, then depressing the clutch.

you will be able to hear the clicking sound, while car is on or off. whenever your clutch reaches about half way in or out!
