I wanted to come up with an easy way for some light weight tie downs but mainly something that I can lock my tool box's and alike reasonably securely.

I'm also not a fan of altering my ute in such a way that it can't be altered back.

So, I came up with the following.

(I know its very simple but I'm sure it will help those who are trade-illiterate).

I found that the aluminum rail around the edge of the tray (where the removable FORD tie downs are) happens to be the same size as your common Uni-strut.

This means that the attachments for the Uni-strut will also fit the grove.

All I did was get the essentials (bolt, uni-strut washer and uni-strut nut and away we go.

Above is a few different types. You could install male or female uni-strut attachments, hooks or whatever uses a 8/10mm thread. The only important thing is that you make sure you get the right uni-strut nut that will sit inside the groove. After experimenting I found that because there is only JUST enough room for the nut, welds and heavy gal layers jammed it up... so "Measure twice, Cut(Buy in this case) once".

ALSO make sure you don't mix Gal and stainless etc. We all know if binding occurs, you will be facing your toy with a grinder!

I went for a bracket from Bunnings and a few washers to make sure that the 10mm bolt DOESN'T protrude past the nut and into the aluminum groove.

I gave mine a spray so nothing rusts as I ground down the edges after I cut myself several times.

As for the security part I mentioned. Someone strolling along could have a shifter in their pocket, but I think its better than the FORD easy-steal option.

I guess if you really wanted to go the whole hog on the security side, you could always use 10mm security set screws, but you wont be able to get them off easily as they do up in one direction only.

I just used a cheap bike lock through the eye bolt and on to my tool box.

Simple I know. But at least the next person won't have to go though the process of thinking it out for themselves.

Gus.
