Upgrading Exhaust - Help!

Hi,

Just bought an 06' XR6 Turbo ute and I'm looking at upgrading the exhaust system but do not know where to begin.

What I do know is that I am not after a great deal of sound, although a lil rumble louder than stock would be appreciated!

I would like to upgrade my stock exhaust system to improve power and efficiency, but more importantly improve breathability and air flow to minimise stress on my turbo and engine, especially at high revs. I will be looking at upgrading the air intake as well in the near future.

Please feel free to express your opinions and experiences (if any) both good AND bad. If you could include estimated prices for each setup that would be great! I live in the ACT too if that helps, and if you could recommend anywhere to go for a good deal that would be even better! Cheers.

Hi mate welcome to the Forum.

There are allot of different options out there, if you just want it a bit louder then what Brods said but if your after more power later down the track then your better off going a full turbo back exhaust. Keep in mind once you start changing the dump pipe or cat you will most likely need a retune aswell.

Thanks Brods and Dillz.

I would like it to sound a little louder, but still within the legal limit (I believe the ACT is 110DB?). The ute is stock with the 6-speed semi-auto and luxury pack and I dont plan to make any HUGE modifications to it, I quite like the stock-stealth look plus helps out with resale value.

I guess my question is what can I change/upgrade in the exhaust system that will improve power and efficiency whilst minimising stress loading on turbo/engine, without having to retune or make any other modifcations to the engine? I will most likely upgrade air intake as well but dont really see myself going any further as its a work ute.

I am looking at spending roundabouts the $1000 mark for an exhaust upgrade? What can I do with that much? (if anything) or do I need to spend more? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

Basically any modifications will give marginal gains without a custom tune where as some cars in the past have picked up around 40 to 50rwkw's with just a tune alone.

If it was me and by the sounds of it you want a bit more go but on a tight budget I would go the following path:

Replace factory cat with a 100 cell cat $200

Remove center muffler $200

Higher flowing injectors $350

F6 Snorkel plus K&N panel filter $170

XCAL3 (For tuning) $700

And custom tune $700

IMO that's about as cheap as you can get it for a decent result although some might disagree. It's tried and tested and alot of people have pretty much gone that path in the past. All those prices are rough you might be able to get them cheaper.

:stupid:

But you'll always want more power, but at least you'll already have an Xcal3 so retune will be cheaper if you do decide you want more.

Thanks guys! greatly appreciate your help on this!!

Ok so I have decided to go 3" dump pipe with high-flow metal cat and 3" custom cat back.

Firstly, is there any issues with this set up that may be obvious? Will it affect my engine/turbo in a negative way at all or cause any future complications (other than defects for no muffler + noise pollution)? Please keep in mind I am not planning on doing any other tuning except a new panel filter + F6 snorkel - this is a work car so I have to keep it tidy.

Secondly, will the sound be overbearing? I mean would it attract a lot of attention? I.e from police lol if anybody else has a similar set up I would be glad to hear from you!!

Thirdly, what level of increase in performance is to be expected?

And lastly, am I paying too much? Best price I could find was $1600

Sorry if these questions sound amateur I am just new to this all. Thanks for understanding!

Cheers,
