Hi Guys

I was wondering if anyone one could please help me out with some advice. I apologise about the length of the post.

I picked up my car from the tuners yesterday (new turbo installed Garret 35/40 ungraded BF turbo)and noticed on the way home that it sounded like I was getting bad compression surge.

My car is a FG XR6Turbo Ute. Mods to date are.

- Upgraded turbo

- SS Growler

- CES Turbo back exhaust

- Turbo Smart Kompact BOV

- FG F6 Injectors

The tuners got 312.9RWKW they had it running higher figures but notice that it wasn't getting enough fuel flow?

they also told me that I had the wrong actuator 4PSI should of been a 8PSI so its getting boost leak and to top it off the upgraded exhaust hole under the waste gate they thought was still not big enough even though its upgraded.

They have said they have tuned it safely but to do this had to basically cut off any power to the car after 5000RMP.

I asked about the compression surge and they mentioned that the BOV I have probable isn't doing its job 100%

So is there any way to stop this surge (as I have been told it is not good for your turbo) with maybe a more free flowing BOV to let the higher amounts of air out created be increased PSI levels?

Any advice would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks

FG F6 injectors are sh1te. They don't flow enough for good power and are probably at max duty cycle.

To maximise fuel flow you'll need:

- Larger injectors, some Seimens 60lb injectors for example

- A larger intank fuel pump like a Bosch 404 or Walbro

To fix the wastegate issue and allow the tuner to control boost better:

- Get a 12psi actuator installed

- Make sure the wastegate has been ported and a 38mm swing valve (flap) has been installed. Otherwise the boost will spike and could cause detonation (pinging)

A retune should get you a lot more power with those things sorted, but your cooler will not do the job and you'll cop heatsoak as the cooler will not cool the charge air enough which will rob a lot of power. A better cooler and piping should be your next upgrade. With all of the above and a cooler you should easily see 350+rwkw on safe boost (15-16psi)

No matter what BOV you use you'll always get the surging sound. Many, many, many people have blocked the BOV off for many, many, many years and never had a problem. Surging hasn't been proven to blow up a turbo so it's all about the sound (or lack of) that you prefer when the throttle shuts. :buttrock:

Thank you very much for you informative info. That has help me a lot.

I will get the turbo sorted with those specs I am glad you mentioned the 12psi actuator.

Thanks again.

What size bov do you have? Is it 25mm or 34mm? And have you tried turning it to soft? As R-SPEC said you will never get rid of it but it may quiet it down a bit.

:stupid: R-SPEC. Covered it well.

Curious as to why you upgraded the turbo mate?

From all the FGT owners that have upgraded the turbo, yours would be the first one Ive heard about that has upgraded the turbo without the basic upgrades needed for a bigger turbo (bigger cooler, fuel pump/surge tank, bigger injectors)

Did you tuner ever mention that you should have upgraded these before they installed a bigger turbo (assuming they did all the work)

How much boost are you running to make 312.9RWKW

Who tuned it?

Hi Dillz

Thanks for that, I will have to check the size of the BOV. When I got the car back home I did turn the BOV to as soft as it could go and It did help a bit.

Thanks again.

Hi kvbaby

To be honest if I had the chance to do this Mod again I would have gone about it a little differently.

Chiptourqe have done all the work to my car. I changed from my stock turbo as the waste gate flapper was catching and not closing properly. I tried to have this fixed yet it keep doing it. So with time restraints I opted for the bigger turbo, however this all happened when the guy I deal with reguarly was on holidays, hence with my lack of knowledge and him not being there the upgraded actuator was not installed.

The list of Mods you mentioned I know I need to do. I was going to do the intercooler before the turbo but it but this happened.

Attached is the dyno graph that shows you the Boost levels up to about 5500RMP. You can see after 5000RPM the difference.

Thank you

That makes sense mate, but yeh get all the things listed, the car will be much better off.

Is it just me or is that a fk load of boost for the stock 35/40?
