Hey guys,

going to start modding my BF XR6turbo ute. its built before 06/06 so I lucked out on the f6 bottom end.

However! I was wondering...

If I upgrade to a bigger intercooler (about the same size as an F6)

and put the F6 air induction system on it.

running at stock boost (5psi)

will I run any risk of doing the dreaded damage of breaking a conrod?

what is the best way to avoid this? whilst working towards actually upgrading the rods themselves?

what should I avoid doing?

thanks guys,

Ben

get a good tuner mate and talk to him they will tell u wat u want and need and if there good they will keep the a/f ratios sweet so u dont throw a leg out of bed in the low 300rwkw mark. if your a brisbane boy send me a pm ill hook u up with a great tuner

Don't be so worried, your bottom end is still good for low to mid 300s.

You`re on the right track, you`re seeking advice and wanting knowledge bwfore you mod.

The obvious ways are to chose your tuner carefully, don`t bounce the thing off the limiter and don`t go crazy with the power output.

Mid 300's is definitely gettable and safe with a decent tuner and correct setup...

With iced on that.

Mine lasted with very low 300 for quite some time but as soon as I replaced my dying turbo with a TO4z setup Tuning very soft, it still broke the rod.

Pissy buggers they are, but even still the F6 ones are not anything special.

I gone with Argo rods and had both side by side and the difference is well you

Just couldn't expect the factory rods to hold what they can.

Pending your power aim, you will need to decide if the F6 rods will do.

it is a ute, that I drive everyday. so I really want to stop modding around the 350 rwHP mark, 400 max. I am hoping that with a good tune in that power range I should be safe. even so, I may just get it done and never have to worry about it. thanks so much for everyones advice!

400hp is still a pretty safe level even with your skinny rods. In a ute you won't need a fuel pump at that level but you could throw one in for extra safety if you want, although I've boosted mine with well under a 1/4 tank and never had fuel surge. If it was a sedan the same thing would kill your motor pretty quickly.

If you think you'll be happy with 350hp(you won't be) just a tune will get you there

As much as safe afr's are important that's not what bends rods. The biggest factor that bends /breaks rods is excessive torque and at the wrong rpm which can be brought on by boost or timing or both bein brought on hard and early. Everyone was on the right track as far as the tuner, a sensible one will know the limits of the engine and work with what are pretty reasonable expectations on your behalf.

As for hardware go as best quality you can afford because the better flowing and efficient the less the tuner will need to push to get results.

There are always risks when you start playing but they've proven to be a pretty reliable engine at that power so should be all good.
