I got a question about speeding and radar.

The Kustom signalls silver eagle radar unit to be precise.

OK - so we all know its not bi-directional, and can only measure speed on approaching vehicles.

It can be used to get road speed though cant it??

So if you are infront of a police officer, travelling in the same direction, and the use the radar on you. Its just there own speed they are registering isnt it??

And the 300m rule will still apply??

No, not exactly.

If a PoliceMAN is behind you (lucky girl) and you are speeding away, he can stop, change the mode to stationary (not mobile) and your speed can be checked as you drive away.

Radar is not a mystery. It is basically a beam that is projected (whether the car is stationary or moving...the instrument doesn't know) and the beam that is projected returns back to the radar head at the speed of light. The computing section determines the difference between the projected beam and the returned beam and calculates the frequency into KMH.

Quite simple.

A good operator will never be beaten at Court because a good operator ALWAYS writes out a fair ticket doens't make them up or guesses.

Those HWP blokes that are radar dependant are brilliant on radar because that's all they write out.

I'm not radar dependant but that means that when I do write out a R.I.N then it is EXACTLY as per the way I was trained.

So to answer you question, a Police vehicle behind you can chekc you speed on radar. He can also check you speed by way of checked speedometer and your speed would already have been estimated prior mto releasing the beam.

Speed estimation is not a mystery either. Constant use of radar instils the knowledge and edperience into the operator on how to 'estimate' the target travelling at a speed. I used to have a competition with a guy that I worked with, in that we would both estimate the speed of the oncoming vehicle PRIOR to releasing the radar beam. The one that got the best number of correct estimations bought dinner (and a candle for two)

Or he can slam it into reverse and add his reversing speed to your forward speed and hit you with a bigger fine

BTW Plonky, what is the comment about coming behind you (lucky girl) about? - you goin' kinky on us or sumptin'??? Had to get in before Ken

OK... I might add a few more details to my questions.

Hypothetically speaking... a person pulls up next to an unmarked cop car at a set of lights.

The lights change, and the 2 cars accelerate. 302m past the set of lights the cop car turns on there siren and pulls the other car over.

The persons car was on the left front of the cop car during the 302 m of travel. (rear drivers door would have been equal with the front guard of the unmarked cop car)

The coppers statement clearly says that they used the radar on the persons car to get them at 30km/h above the legal limit.

(however, the coppers statement also lists the wrong car colour, the wrong lanes in which the cars were in, and the wrong direction of travel)

The 300m rule still should apply in this instance shouldnt it?? Because by my calculations its impossible for the car to exceed the speed limit and travel 300m in the distance that the police followed the car for.

(P.S It did get thrown out of court anyways due to the persons exceptional driving record for 10 years)

Dear Ponch

On Wednesday I was once again pulled over to have the pipe checked on my bike(legal and ADR stamped)while heading up the Old PacifIc Hwy with a few friends While I am mainly well behaved around Mr Plod I started getting the sh!ts with this young copper who was a total smartar$e

While everything on the bike was being checked over a group of Harleys came barrelling along, shot gun pipes blaring .When I asked Mr plod why I was being harrassed and not the Harleys he told me to shut up or I would be booked as he had me for being 12 k's over the limit

Why is it that Harley's can be deemed legal with straight thru pipes and not even a hint of baffles :finger:
