No worries CDM, I would be the first to admit that I slow down for the stationary speed cameras and then resume my normal speed once I get passed.

I certainly don't speed unnecessarily, and I certainly don't trust my fellow colleagues to let me off if they caught me committing a traffic offence (they certainly won't at all....they're more likely to write up a copper than a Kebabanese that stands over them)

Quite frankly I am sick of the focus upon speed, when basic and technical things such as Stop Signs, using indicators, Giving Way, vehicle compliance etc is much more important.

If the 85th percentile was actually used that would mean that 85 percent of people travelling a section of road found that a certain speed is appropriate for that road then that should be what the speed limit is: So in some places (Gt Western Highway near the Leura Turnoff signposted 60, should be an 80) then that's what the speed limit should be.

Probably why I've only written 20 radar tickets as opposed to 270 TINS last month.

Just a question,

When I am driving along and someone opens their car door parked on the side of the road.

Do I try to avoid it by going into the other line and risk having a head on. Or I should stay in my line and hit the poor guy?

This happens to me almost daily on the way home.

Same here, I swear some people are just waiting for you to come along to open their door into you.

Personally I always check my mirrors before opening anything at all. But the odd idiot parked halfway into the lane for one, still seems fit to swing the door all the way open when you are almost upon them.

Annoyes the living sh!t out of me....

The use of sirens on emergency vehicles...

I have had a long history working in Emergency Deaprtments, so I have atteneded a few 000 parties and usually know Ambo's (and the local GD police) quite well.

A couple of months ago, I was a passenger uin my son's car, he was driving, we were in a line of traffic doing 60 in the right hand lane. The left lane (it was a two lane road through town) was also reasonably heavy with traffic. A vehicle with high beams on was tailgating him. They were so close and the lights so bright neither of us could tell what it was. I said "just stay on the speed limit and ignore him".

After fifteen seconds or so, the siren goes off behind us, my son at first slows then pulls to the left lane, to allow a bloody large VW Ambulance by in the right hand lane.

No continuation of the siren or emergency lights.

The driver (I know the guy) is unaccompanied, and turns into a street that leads to the local fast food joints - it was 1830.

Isn't there strict rules for when an emergency vehicle can use it's sirens? I used to go on retrievals with the Ambos and one of them told me off (nicely) for mucking about with the siren - yes, you can't take me anywhere.

First of all you are entitled to travel in the right lane (on a multi lane road) because the speed limit was 60kmh

You are only required to stay left unless overtaking when a sign indicates this or the speed limit is MORE than 80kmh (that means 90kmh)

There are no strict rules as to when you can or can't use the warning devices but it may have been the case that the Ambo was pretty hungry and wanted to get something to eat soon.....or he was called to the fast food joint on a medical job (someone got the Hamburglers nose stuck in the bum or something)

Sounds like he just wanted a clear run through the traffic.....not very smart.

Are the digital cameras running in most NSW vehicles. Was just informed by QLD budgetary commitee that in focus with budget objectinve there will be money for the purchase of them in QLD in 2010. This makes me so mad. If these people just realised the money in man hours and court costs these would save. I have seen them in QLD hoon squad vehcles but they stop there.

the rain "soaks" in some of the beam energy making it least effective, but will not make it inaccurate. It has to be severe rain to slow it down too.

Have had a case where it was Far North QLD monsoon rain nad could hardly see out the rear. Heard it activate so I ordered the shot for "the hell of it" The photo quality was surprising even seeing the driver in the front seat through the rain. They are set on 1/1000 shutter speed for this reason and to take two per second if need be.

The digital cameras have still not been introduced for the cars in NSW.

Like anything this dumb Dept. does, they have focus groups, studies, trials etc without committing to anything.

It had to wait until a Policeman was murdered for the Cops to get Stop Sticks.

I'm not holding my breath for the cameras!
