If you are really charging hard, as in doing track work etc, IMO there is an advantage.

If you want to be really adventureous, you could practice changing without the clutch. It wont be kind to the syncros but it's a good show-off thing in front of your mates.

No mechanical advantage, just allows you to get off the clutch quicker and more smoothly.

Plus it sounds cool :finger:

Many years ago Mrs Z broke a clutch cable in her Fiat 128sl coupe. Very sweet gearbox! After a very jumpy start (half throttle start in first) I was able to drive 10 km home without any problems or gear crunches by matching the revs and easing the gear lever from gear to gear when the synchro seemed happy. But it was in the hills - no stop signs or red lights. After that, just for the hell of it, I often didn't bother to use the clutch in that car and the gearbox lasted the distance with no problems. Mrs Z used to get a bit sh*tty because she thought I was mistreating her little car just to show off! In retrospect, I admit there was probably some truth in that.

Matching revs eases strain on the syncro rings - changing without a clutch in a syncro box has little or no effect on the syncros as they are not being used. If you ease the lever through the gate gently at the correct revs there is no damage to the gears - however if you graunch it then obviously there is damage occuring. I learnt to drive with crash gearboxes and sometimes like to show-off too - just a kid at heart heheheh.

I belive there is an advantange when changing down gears as you slow down, you are always in the correct gear and it's lighter on the brakes. ever wonder why the auto's have more problems with the brakes than the manuals?

I could be totally wrong here but isn't that variable? If I'm changing down to second at 40 then it's a different rev range to if I was changing down at 60. That's what I would have thought anyway... But what would I know - I'm the chump that asked the question in the first place ;)

If the gear you're changing into is, say, 20% lower, the revs will need to be 20% higher (and vice versa). In practice, it's a matter of subjectively trying to estimate how fast the motor will be revving at that speed in the lower gear, but not thinking numbers or looking at the tacho - just "playing it by ear". Changing up, a gearbox with strong synchromesh will tend to just "slot in" as the revs fall to the right level. Well, that's been my experience, anyway. If in doubt, use th clutch - cheaper to fix/replace than gearboxes.
