THE Victorian Government will spend this month mapping out a timeline for the introduction of its new tough anti-hoon laws, named a top priority at the state election.

This comes as a spate of reckless driving behaviour on Wyndham roads last week shocked police, including a P-Plater clocked at 90km/h over the limit in a Wyndham Vale residential area.

The man’s car was impounded for 48 hours under anti-hoon laws.

Under the proposed law, he would have lost his car for 30 days.

Paul Price, spokesman for Crime Prevention Minister Andrew McIntosh, said the process of introducing the new laws was under way.

“The minister is in the process of receiving briefings in order to determine the legislative timetable for the introduction of tough new hoon laws,” Mr Price.

“These tough new laws will increase impoundment times, force hoon drivers to take safe driving training, and forfeit and crush the vehicles of the worst repeat offenders.”

The new changes would see an immediate 30-day vehicle impoundment for a first hoon offence and three months for a second offence.

This is tougher than the amendment proposed by the former Brumby Labor Government, which wanted a seven-day impoundment for the first offence.

A third would result in the vehicle being stripped for parts and then crushed.

Wyndham Highway Patrol detected a driver, 18, as he sped along Ballan Rd at 160km/h, 90km/h over the limit, on January 3.

Sen-Constable Matt Wilson, of the Wyndham Highway Patrol, said he was in disbelief when he sighted the speeding P-plater at 10.20pm.

He said the consequences of a crash would have been fatal.

The driver was fined $597 fine, lost eight demerit points and his licence was suspended for 12 months.

The incident capped five hours of reckless behaviour on Wyndham roads that night.

A Tarneit man, 39, was caught driving at 131km/h in a 100kmh zone along Hopkins Rd Truganina. He lost his licence for a month, was fined $328 and had four demerit points deducted.

Dagabond I agree.

I have 2 differeng opinions.

On one side its the ex copper in me. I spent 10 years as a collision investigator attending fatal and serious injury collision around the state. Based on what I've seen and the causes of some of these prangs I say, "yep, slow the bastards down". There are a certain % of drivers who just havent got an idea. Seriously. They think they are the next schumaker, have no regard for speed limits, safety or anyone else. You see them everyday.

The other side of me is the guy that drives a 600hp car around everyday. Jeez if I nail it to overtake, I'm doing 160 before I've passed the other car. Most of you know what I mean.

I can't afford to loose my licence but god all mighty I don't want my baby sat in some impound yard for 30 days, especially for one mistake. So to that end I think its quite harsh.

Theres a line you have to draw. And that line is simply the D1ckhead factor. There are those (and I've been one) who are simply d1ckheads and really don't deserve to be driving let alone drive a powerful car. And I'm not just talking P platers or young people. But there are those who don't fall under that line. But its the d1ckheads that you want off the road.

I think among us we need to have open discussion and perhaps representation made to our local members to ensure excessively harsh laws are not introduced that penalises those not guilty of being a d1ckhead.

PS..Its not the coppers fault. Its the pollies who make the law. Fair enough, the coppers advise. Makes me sad.

My first thought to the question was.... "you do" ... yeah I know I suck.

And Rudiger... that's the risk we take riding or driving something that can I guess. Sucks I know. Even on my Gay Viffer when all the valves open up can do silly speeds very quick. On the Duc it's just impossible not to when overtaking.

I still think we need to be graded for what we drive. Then the comen sense card can be played by those that do have to enforce the law.

It's not the coppers fault... I just hate it when they are pricks about stuff...

I came around a long winding corner once and was doing 65km/h in a 70 zone... Got pulled into a booze bus. Got drug and booze tested - nothing... I don't drink... Anyway... The head cop was a female and she walked up and said... "you need to slow down buddy... One of the TOGs saw you come around the corner and predicted you were doing 100km/h..."

I advised her that I knew they were there and was in fact well under the speed limit... She wanted to argue the point...

I got pissed off... I said "kinda unfair picking on me cause I have a nice looking car... I have brand new Tyres, no oil leaks, my car is serviced more than it needs to be and I look after it like it's my son!!! Pull your head in... Don't try pick on me cause you 'think' I am a 'hoon'"...

Anyway. She walked off... The guy said that she was a bitch and did stuff like that regularly...

I can handle getting pulled up when I've done something wrong... But it sh*ts me when people make stuff up!!!

XR09 very true but think of the guy who gets a clubby for his 21st birthday off mum and dad. Youd think, "hey, hell be a hoon" You may be right. But then theres the guy in the Daewoo Lanos doing 140 in a 60 zone. Which one is more dangerous, yet the guy in the clubby or the XRT is the one who will get picked on. Not fair I know.

Worm, I wish I had a dollar for every story like that I have heard. Mate, I could be a pr!ck when I worked the highways, and I have had coppers very VERY rude to me as well. And I know what you say is true because I know what to say and what to do and yet they still are rude.

Theres definately the "mongrel factor" but for the most part, II'd say most arent a bad bunch. I was a pretty good bloke, I reckon.

I think there needs to be some definate discretion in inforcing it or there will be a bloody uprising.

I'll tell you this for nothing. With current hoon laws as they stanb, I wouldn't have a police licence very long. HA. I could tell ya stories. lol

what happens, if you get done twice, and you borrow someones car, and get done in that for your third offence

I don't see anything wrong with that. But then, I also think that those caught looting during the flood crisis should be executed on the spot, so my views/opinions may be a bit extreme.

Seriously, if you drive like an arsehole (you know who you are) then you deserve to have your car impounded.

Do not try to lay this on the police. They are out there doing the job that we pay them to do. My son is a police officer and I know that he has good days and bad days just like the rest of us. If he pulls you over and you decide to give him a bit of lip, then no, he will probably not be very nice to you. This is PROPOSED legislation being introduced by those who have been elected by the majority. If you feel that the legislation is unjust, then write to your elected representative. Whingeing on a public forum is not going to accomplish anything.
