I wouldn't have it sunken unless you are going to have weep holes for water.

If your gong to paint the marine ply anyways you can always fill the join and sand it back so it looks as one piece.

Or alternate you can always get a gloss vinyl to stick over the whole top.

looking good man. like others have said, if you can make it look exactly like that picture, you'll be on a winner. what to use for the centre I'm not sure. you want something that will still have a solid feel about it. per-spex might be the go if you could get it half inch thick or so.

perspex is a sh*t idea, its heavy and has no strength.

I still think the dark coloured wood you had pictures of floating a few pages back looked best.
