Invest in a good quality (snap on) 14mm flank drive spanner. Sometimes if you get 2 different brands of spanner the ring end multihex part is slightly different. So in other words when you turn it with one spanner but cant turn it quite enough to get the spanner on again, use the other spanner. Never had a problem pulling turbos off with the manifold left in the car but theres not much more involved in pulling the whole lot off together either. I dont think it will help you get this nut off though.

Can you remove the compressor housing and turbo core, and just work on the exhaust housing. I have done this with my Calais Turbo but you have to be careful of the exhaust blades, dont want to chip or stuff em. Otherwise pull the whole lot off and work on the bench.

Well I got it off. Cant believe how hard it was though patience is defiantly the key.

I ended up getting the bottom bolt off however the top bolt was stuffed and nothing appeared to work.

I ended up heating it with a heat-gun then my 14mm king-chrome ratchet spanner to crack it. Once I got this far it was easy.

I also ended up taking the manifold off as well as it was much easier to crack that nut when I had a little bit of movement from this.

I will end up having to replace those 4x bolts anyway so I don't mind if I damaged 1x of them.

Now on to the turbo to work out whats wrong with that.

Cheers for the help

Hi Guys

Finally got the turbo off the car now I need to work out where to go from here

I have taken 2x pictures of the turbo to show what I can see.

Firstly on the hot-side I can see that one of the bolts is snapped and appears to have been like that for some time (I never had to undo that bolt when taking it off)

I have owned the card for most of its life(got it at 20k now 130k) Second owner so its either happened since I have had it or its something that happened early in its life and no one has noticed it.

Secondly the cold-side has alot of scratches around the inside of the housing. Which means the blades are hitting this. Also you will notice something that looks like paint on one of the blades I have no idea what this would be.

What I want to do now is either try and work out how to repair it. Is it possible to do this at home or is it something that will need "specialist turbo tools". If so who can I take it to to at least get a cost on repair/replacement. Basically I don't want to spend say $600 getting it looked at, only to find out I now need to rebuild it which will cost an additional $1000 or something like that.

I mean if its going to cost me $1600 to repair I might as well look at either a good second hand unit or spend a little more and get a brand new one.

Also is it even worth me considering a better turbo as a replacement?

Cheers

Make sure you check your oil supply line for being blocked and change the supply line filter that screws into the engine block under the inlet manifold. Otherwise your new turbo will die very soon too. Oh and just get a changeover turbo assy from MTQ or somewhere like that.

I plan on getting a one of these http://www.mscn.com.au/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=631 a MS XR6 Turbo Oil Feed Kit Including Filter. I assume this is a good one to replace it with ???

Also when you mean changeover turbo assy is this like a kit with parts and I just reuse some of my old turbo parts to build it. Or is it like a swap where I send them my turbo they give me a new one ?

What would something like this cost generally ?

Cheers

(also I assume my threads where all put into one thanks for that I wasn't sure if I should keep them separate or not)

keep your eyes peeled for someone who has upgraded their turbos and selling their older turbo which have been modified. Or whilst your there, go a bigger turbo and manifold that are for sale together ready for you to just bolt into your car. Chekc for sale thread.

Mate I sent you a pm about a second hand turbo core and ported exhaust housing and larger flapper that has been fitted too it, that will be available in 1-2 weeks from now..

Let me know what you would like to do.

Cheers
