Advice With Turbo

Hi Guys/Girls

I have been a member of these forms for a while and have always been reading but never posting. (I have a stock as a rock BA xr6t ute which has only done 130k)

I now I am having an issue and I am not sure what path to take and I hope I can get some advice on this.

So my early Christmas present was a weird sound coming from my car. Basically I was driving back from work and every now and then I could hear a whir type sound with the car which I was driving off boost.

When I got home and turned off the car and I hear a very mechanical whir as the turbo spins down (not the normal sound)

So I haven't driven the car since and today got a chance to have a quick look. (Attached is a picture of the turbo with the pipe off)

To me it looks like the front nut is broken on the top left hand side in this picture also there was a little bit of oil on the base of the housing which I wiped of with my finger.

Now I want to know what to do from here:

1. I assume my turbo is stuffed/unbalanced now

2. What sort of cost am I looking at if its completely stuffed (worst case)

3. Is there a cost effective way to get this looked at and fixed, seeing as I have just bought all family and friends Christmas presents and will take me a few months to build up my savings again.

4. I am fairly mechanically minded and I am willing to give anything a go (I haven't specifically done anything with turbo's parts before though.)

4. I live in Perth WA so is there any companies/people that are recommend to look at this

Its funny how things like this always happen at the most appropriate time. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

Sounds like the bearing pack might have given in. The oil you are describing is just blow by from the engine coming through the breather of the rocker cover. Let me know I have a Turbo available with modified wastegate and actuator if this one is stuffed.

The nut is fine they remove material off of it as part of balancing the turbo core. However it does look like the compressor blades may be touching the housing?

:stupid:

Thanks for the replies.

Interesting that they do that to the nut for balancing reasons.

When I spin the blades with my fingers they do seem to rub a little.

Should I take my car somewhere that will look at the turbo? Would I need to remove the turbo or should I just take the car as is just in-case its something else ? Who Might be good in WA to look at this ?

With the bearing pack is this something that can be repaired or is it something that needs the turbo to be rebuilt/replaced??

Cheers for the help

Dave

That is quite standard for balancing as if you cut part of a blade off you loose the effect from that blade, so the nut is really only option. If you can remove the turbo and take it to a specialist.

Dave,

If you want someone to check then I'd take into Simon at XFT Midvale and get him to give his opinion. To fix the turbo it will need to be removed and sent for a rebuild. This can cost anywhere between $900 and $1700 depending on the repairer.

Hi Dave,

Sounds like your turbo has done the same as mine has done recently. I have completely removed the turbo (easy enough to do in your driveway with minimal tools) and while it wasn't touching the housings I could hear and feel that the bearings were not right. I removed the front and rear housings off the core and found that they had not been touched at all. This being the case I have decided to buy a whole new core and to bolt my existing housings to it. I am yet to buy one due to christmas taking all my money but have been quoted $1200inc GST and postage for a brand new Garrett core.

I have also bought a replacement oil feed line with in line filter (EARLS one from Ebay) and will fit it when I put the new turbo back on to help prevent any future issues and would suggest you do the same. This gets rid of the factory screen that can become blocked.

Anyway hope this helps and good luck.

Jez.

If the wheels and housings have not been damaged you could just get the bearing pack replaced and have the turbo balanced again. Will cost half of a new $1200 core.

how much boost are u running?

how many kms has the turbo been on the motor.

while u save up to get the core replaced or replace the turbo, maybe u cud lower the boost and try to initiate ways to prolong the turbo life.
