Im planning on buying a tranny cooler and doing the setup on the f6 for the zf. I realise there is mixed results on these, however I have not found any threads which tell me the exact operating temp SAFE range of a zf trans, I hear that if they run too cold its no good and personally know if they run to hot they go into limp mode, so I was wondering if anyone knows what the operation temp range is, that is safe for a zf transmission,

so what temp does it get to on normal operation (commuting), how hot does a perfectly good working zf get to under some hills/drag racing type scenarios without going into limp mode.

I plan on going down the path of being able to control the temp a lot better so as to get the best life and pwr through the box. cheers.

All I can find in my manuals is the it shouldnt exceed 130 and during filling and checking of levels it says not above 50, sorry I cant find anything about the actual operating temps. It also claims that the coolers that are factory fitted to the car should be good up to 2300KG towing.

Hope this helps a little.

Hooked up to the OBD2 port on my ute I constantly read the ZF temp.

Normally sits between 90 and 105 depending on how its driven.

that does help cheers mate, very interesting actually,

odd how the trans should not exceed 130 and yet ford use the coolant to help cool the zf oil, and the coolant itself I would have thought would be around 120+ degrees?

interesting.

that's how my gauge reads 40-60-80-100-120, if you want exact figures I can get them. In north QLD when coolant temp is 93c (where normally sits) the trans temp is usually 97ish

Stock tune ,no trans or oil coolers

hey Brendan, what OBD2 device are you using?

the one I got is too limited, I can't get it to read tranny temp.

I'm using Innovate's OT-2. I've hooked it up to the wideband LC-1 and on the iphone screen I have the AFR, IAT and coolant temp. I have cobalt engine oil temp, afr and boost so I really wanted tranny oil temp on the iphone screen instead of AFR except when data logging.

Most people run a cooler thermostat when they get a tune also and it is 82 degrees from memory which helps keep the Trans cooler during

normal use.

the thermostat may open at 82 but the cars definately run hotter than that...

I think the cars run at about 120 degrees or more with spirited driving.
