Diff. Mine has the diff whine all the time and always has but will be even worse if given curry just off idle like you have said.

If it was to change pitch at different rpm's it would then be alternator whine, again like mine has!

Not very loud but very high pitch?

If so then its the box mate. Common thing with the BTR 4 speed, mine does it and every Falcon taxi I've ridden in does it.

thanks heaps for the feed back guys....YOB POM you seem to have described the noise well. I had a transmition bloke come for a ride in it. turns out it is mainly 1st gear. he said that it could be the gear set or a certain needle bearing (cant remeber the name). worst case gear set and rebuid ($3800), if it was just the bearing they would still rebuild ($1850).....

im going to get a second opinion cause it all seems quite drastic. apart from reverse being a little slow to engage, and this noise it operates fine.

should I be really worried ? cause I sort of am a bit going from the prices they qouted me!

I wouldn't be worried, mine was always seemed to pause for a second before selecting reverse, it's just another 4 speed quirk.

As for the noise, I wouldn't be running into rebuilds either, try a tranny service ( not the kind kv gets) and see if that helps.

lastest update on situation - got a second opinion off an abviously much more honest operator. his verdict was, that yes it would most likely be the planetaries, because in BA's they are prone to the hardening on the gears wearing off, causing this slight whine. on the upside, he said whist it is a little annoying, the box is shifting nicely, and recomended a service and oil cooler, and drive it until it actually gets worse. he said many of these will run with this slight whine without getting worse for years, whilst others may break after a couple of months. and even better it turns out through him an entire rebuild (including the gear set) is $1750......moral of the story - shop around, there are some decent guys still out there that dont try panic tactics to take your money...
