Well at least on mine I don't have LSD so I'm not worried if both wheels don't spin though on a smooth even road under power driving dead straight both wheels whill spin on an open wheeler diff.

On dirt maybe - but in the situation you described the OSR wheel will break traction first and spin.

Mondie,

You'll have to keep me posted on the developments with your car as this is of special interest to me! I know for certain that I will not be putting up with it for much longer, letalone the next 3 years!!! I will be camped out at my dealer demanding that it be fixed or I shall not be leaving. I think also the threat of me driving my sparkling new XR6T into some nice orifices will get them motivated!! (Kidding!)

I too will be on the hunt for a dealer who will be willing to investigate and solve the problem. Silly question, my hubbies uncle is a mechanic and I know he is able to do the services on my car, but do you think he can check this problem out????

He might be able to give you an independant opinion on whats wrong so that when you find a dealer who is willing to help you will know what you are on about.

It cant hurt.

l'll let you know what they say next week.

What your mentioning about not putting up with the dealer for a band aid fix so to speak is the exact reason why I decided to leave my diff alone with the incorrect crown and pinion tolerance as mentioned by WBT56. Until Ford actually rebuild the diffs to proper spefications or pay the cost for a specialised diff/gearbox place to rebuild we'll never see a cure to the problem.

All this stuff with chatter kits, new lubricants and shims will do jack to the diffs if the crown and pinion is stuffed. Fact of the matter is I don't have LSD and I'm getting the same problem.

Also putting a new diff would yeild nothing as after a few 100km's it would do exactly the same as the old one.

Now as far as I'm aware this problem has started since the release of the AU (My EF Wagon was perfect no clunk nothing and it was a manual). It seems the manual cars amplifies the diff clunking through the driveline whereas the automatic kindof masks the situation and possibly the vibs etc is absorbed by the torque converter.

Next issue is about durability, I have monitored my diff sounds carefully and can say that so far after 14k driving the noises has not got any worse and seems to be the same. Even under heavy acceleration the diff seems to be coping ok. "Touch's wood".

So if Ford don't actually want to pay for a complete rebuild of the diff then our only way to fix the problem is to shell out extra money to get the thing repaired. Good thing for me is it's an excuse to get LSD Yay.

Another idea is to push Ford to go back to the diff supplier and find out what the hells going on with such dodgy tolerances.

My 2c worth of say,

Cheers.

l am not willing to leave it alone even if l get stuffed around, l will keep pushing until l get to the bottom of the problem. Its just not acceptable.

Certainly wont be paying out of my pocket to have it fixed either, l didnt spend $50k on a new car so l could pay to fix Fords problems.

Car goes in Monday so l will let you know what they say/find

Not happy Jan.

Our car went into the local dealers today to have the driveline measured for slack to see if it met tolerance.

Apparently our car has 25mm of backlash, which is exactly HALF of the 50mm the Ford spec lists as acceptable. Unbelievable, l would hate to imagine what a car with twice as much driveline shunt as ours would be like on the road. It would be very unsatisfying to drive l reckon.

Next plan of attack is to take the car down to Melbourne to the dealer we bought it from, New Oak Ford. l am hoping they will be more willing to do something about it and push the issue with Ford. If that doesn't work then off to another dealer, the one who did the servicing on our previous TS50. It will be cheaper for Ford just to fix it than to pay for 3 or 4 dealers all to do the same analysis ( which apparently takes 4 or 5 hours!!) and tell us it mets spec.

l was given a copy of a Ford internal bulletin about "IRS Driveline Clunks" and they had neatly highlighted a quote that says some amount of audible noise can be heard but it is a normal operational noise and is not detrimental to the operation of the vehicle. The bulletin refers to the AU1 so it seems Ford hasn't updated their spec on this nor addressed a problem that goes back 4 years. The noise as annoying as it is, isn't my concern anyhow. Its the Frankenstein feel of the driveline and effort that it takes to shift smoothly that l am bothered by.

End of rant.

Excellent inverstigating work there Mondie. So it looks like my suspicians is right. Seems the tolerance of Ford diffs are lousy. But I guess there sort of right when the quote

"some amount of audible noise can be heard but it is a normal operational noise and is not detrimental to the operation of the vehicle"

But yes it's still annoying as you have to anticipate changes to avoid the clunk.

I had my 3,000km check last thursday. one of the things I had on my list was a diff whine at about 95km/hr - especially when on cruise control. imagine my surprise when the dealer agreed with me after they tested it. I was expecting the usual responses, like "we tested the diff and its fine - they are suposed to make some noise....etc etc.."

Centre Ford have advised Ford of the problem and will let me know next week what they are going to do about it.

I was told by someone who should know that for the first 2 yrs any diff probs are fixed through BTR,(or whatever they are called now) For the 3rd year of the warranty the Dealer can have it fixed at an independant workshop and Ford cop the $$$$.

With my last 2 Ford/BTR Lsd's I have let my dealer have a few go's and then put up with it until yr 3 when all of the problems seem to vanish when they have another go at it.

Cheers, Bazza.
