ninka ... you are pretty spot on and also - in the solid rear axle housing a lot of the vibrations/backlash was absorbed into the housing via the bearings etc., so the problem was still there, but to a smaller degree and it was also "masked".

BTW I personally believe the Watts link rear end that Ford used was, and still is, the best compromise for an Aussie family sedan for many reasons, but to go into it here is not what this thread is about so ...

HEY 100 posts !! Geez have I got too much time on my hands or what ??

Answer to 2) I think you had better go and talk to some Expensive Daewoo people as they have complained about diff clunking for probably longer than we have. Also their crap IRS design probably flops around enough due to not being mounted solidly that the thumps and knocks are not as evident. From memory we got the newer version of the diff than they did.

You need to read my first post more carefully. The noise that causes the problem in holdens is the clack/clack from the hemisphere assembly. This thread is talking about the C&P backlash related clunk from power on/power off, in low km cars. What issues other manufacturers have is irrelevant. People are saying that the clunk is annoying and unacceptable in it's own right. Your reply is "Expensive Daewoo has the same problem, only worse". If BMW, Mercedes, Aston Martin, etc, all had diff clunks would you say it is then acceptable? It is a known problem, it has been going on for 3 or more years, it is easy to fix, so why don't they fix it?

Ok so if I'm not wrong, to properly fix this clunking diff in the late model falcons one has to go to a diff place and get it rebuilt guess it's a good time for me to get the LSD fitted as well.

I bought my XR6 with 17k on it and it has been clunk since. Just wondering for the people who bought there Falcons new how many km's does it take before the clunks etc start. Whats intersting is that it seems the auto transmission masks alot of the diff clunks etc, seems the auto are much more refined in that way.

Oh yeah in regards to driving a non-LSD XR, I'm glad my car has the 17inch wheels with 235 SP9000's, still spins like buggery when provoked but I think with anything narrower I would getting way too much smoke from the right rear tyre.

XR_Strider_GuY,

My AUII Auto XR6 VCT started the dif clunk (going around corners slowly sounding like it had a locker diff) started at 15,000km. I got the dif kit and the noise went away. I also complained about the LSD not working. (put left wheel in dirt - does not work, put right wheel in dirt - works fine) They have replaced it a few times. Now is sort of OK. Have not bothered for a while now..

Sorry for the slow reply. Was waiting to do one like yours (I6). AUII XR6 5 speed, 72000kms. Very bad clunk on power on/off, and very poor LSD operation. Removed diff and stripped it. Found that diff had already been rebuilt (by dealer?) once. C&P clearance was way off spec, hence the clunk. Wrong oil was used(synthetic), and had caused the LSD to glaze up. The LSD was in perfect condition, it just didn't work. This is the anti-chatter kit at work, it stops the clunk by disabling the LSD. Set the diff up correctly, fitted the correct oil and it goes like a beauty, no clunks at all.

Well at least on mine I don't have LSD so I'm not worried if both wheels don't spin though on a smooth even road under power driving dead straight both wheels whill spin on an open wheeler diff.

Looks like I'll have to get the Crown and Pinion Wheel fixed, aligned and then retro fit an LSD mechanism.

WBT56,

Just curiously what workshop are you from?

I am so over being told that I have to put up with the clunk and grind in my new $50K car. What a crock of sh*tE! 3 times I have had it back to the dealer and numerous phone calls, but still nothing has been done, just told that that is how it is. The trip from Newcastle to Sydney each times gripes me. I know there is a problem and so do they, is just a matter that they don't want to have to fix it or don't know how. I know that my hubbies AU XR8 series 1 went through 6 diffs before the problem was fully sorted out.

l agree with you Lisa, l have whinged plenty of times on this forum about drivelune shunt.

Our car is booked in with the dealer on Monday, they want it for most of the day so they can measure all tolerances in the drivelne, pull the diff cover off and measure internal clearances etc. l am hoping this is the first step in getting it fixed. If they cant do anything for me then l am off to find a dealer who is willing to put in the time and effort with Ford to get it fixed. l am not putting up with it for the next 3 years
