Hi all,

I am looking to buy a XR6T and I am wondering what would my best options be?

Here are the facts:

- Have around $19,000 to spend

- Car will be a daily driver

- Want under 100,000k's

- Want an Auto box

- I'm in Victoria (If anyone had something they would like to flog to me)

Anyway what I know so far is that the ZF gearbox is a piece of artwork, however I am wondering was the BA box (4speed) a strong box or would I be better off going for the ZF (BF)???

Any advice on this topic would be much appreciated.

BTR 4 speed good for 280rwkw maybe more with the right tune...

ZF good for 350rwkw with a decent tune, but have seen 400rwkw...

Get a ZF... And a post July 06 model... And you're laughing! Typhoon bottom end and ZF... Win/win...

Could be hard to find a ZF post 06/06 with low k's and within his budget though.

Can you save for a bit longer and get low/mid 20s to buy a tidy BF2 with the specs you are looking for?

Yep like the above, get a ZF BF2 after July 2006. You might be extremely lucky to get one under $19 000. It will take some looking and some patience though. Another $2 or $3 grand would be better.

Mine was $21k BF2 August 06 build with 85000 kms from a dealer back in July

There was a bf2 in a caryard at Morno for 20k a few week ago, but I knew the old owner and it had gone since it's 3000km service without another one. Upto 80 odd now. Gearbox was leaking, diff bushes were well and truly f*cked etc.

But haggle for warranty and you could do ok?

Or save up a couple extra and get a neat one privately with good history.

Thanks for that guys.

I was thinking the ZF would be the way to go but just had to get confirmation. I will keep looking and see what I can come up with. What does the XR6 non turbo with the ZF go like?? Just out of interest.

Make sure the bonnet release lever works (and doesn't fall off the fuse panel) then ensure all the door locks actually lock (lock the vehicle with the keypad and attempt to open all doors). On the test drive: make sure the heater works, scrutinise all noises heard and vibrations felt underneath (centre diff bush, front suspension etc) during a high speed motorway run and low speed cornering run. Make sure the foglamps work and the red airbag warning lamp remains off. If able, take the vehicle to a local suspension shop for a free inspection (Pedders charge $14.00 but well worth it) to see if any bushes/ball joints need replacing. These are the common problems I've experienced with my BA Wagon and BA XR6T ownership.

Test drive as many as you can (I test drove a stock XR6T first to set the baseline), but as a guide my privately purchased April 2003 BA XR6T with 73,500 KM on the clock, which included premiuim sound/leather, 19 inch wheels and a recently installed $5,000 Nizpro Stage 1+ engine upgrade to 400 RWHP (good for a 12.8203 ET at Heathcote Raceway on my first run), set me back $18,500.00 six months ago. Test drive this one for a comparision.

If I were to procure another I'd go for a BF with the improved automatic/driveline, but I just couldn't pass up the deal on my vehicle (it frightened the life out of me when the seller put his foot down and I had to have it). Turned out he'd already gone the whole black on black theme I was planning on:

Good luck!

I think I have found a possible car. It is a September build 06 and has around 85k on the clock. Stock standard (but that is what I was after). I will be looking at it on Monday. I have been told that it has a couple of chips in the front bar (minor) and some gutter rash on the wheels. The service history is very good and has always been serviced ahead of time. Has had 2 previous owners 1st it was a fleet car and then the 2nd owners traded it in on a Merc. The service history shows that it has been serviced at the same dealership it's whole life.

Well it all sounds good but I will update further once I have taken it for a drive and registered all the sounds and feel.

Anything in particular that I should be looking for when I look at the car?

Yeah I looked at that BA yesterday on CarSales. I would still like the ZF box though so I think I'm going to hold out for a 06 or 07 XR6T. But like I said above I will be looking at one on Monday so here's hoping!!

And I didn't know that from 06/06 they had the Typhoon bottom end, that's cool.

Not to thread steal but probably a good place to ask. With the May? 2007 upgrade apart from the extra body changes such as the front winglets what were the other changes? I heard from a bloke at work (so probably crap) that they also came with bigger brakes?

PS: Just sold my car, so now actively looking but in no rush to buy. Just waiting for the right one.
