I shut the car down and you can imagine the feeling when I could hear a bad grinding noise from inside the car coming from the engine bay. Didnt notice anything out of the ordinary during the drive the car was making boost ok. Pulled the inlet to the turbo off and it spins freely but does not sound good. There is no scoring and the intake fins all look fine. There is also a small ammount of play up and down and forward and back (not sure how much it should have). The turbo was removed very recently to get the wastegate ported and a custom tune done and has been running at 17PSI for about 3 weeks.I'll be pulling the turbo off over the next few days and I'm just wondering what my best option is. Im hoping there is not going to be much damage and I can get it fixed up. How much to get the bearings re-done and is there any brand / type I should be looking for? Who's the best out there to fix these things? If anyones had this happen to them please post up.Any feedback is appreciated. I'll post whatever I find when I remove the turbo.Cheers,Jez. When the turbo was off about 3 weeks ago I was told the turbo was getting oil fine. I'll find out when I pull it off (hopefully this sun). Do you think it is worth removing? I service every 7.5k.Spoolxr6 can you PM me your number so I can ring you about your turbo?Cheers.

The bearing oil feed inside the cartridge is something like 10 or 20 thou from memory and they get blocked and cause the bearing pack to run very hot from a lack of lubrication. Makes like a grinding sound when it spins but the wheels dont touch the housing? Take the turbo to a turbo specialist, getting everything inside the cartridge replaced and a high speed balance should cost you about $600. JK89 Member 56 Member For: 13y 11m 7d Posted 14/12/10 10:51 AM Share Posted 14/12/10 10:51 AM Unfortunatly the oil inlet is a very small hole 1- 1.5mm, and oil contamination is a massive problem on the GT35's.Two problems are the inlet hole becoming blocked/ and or carbon getting into the bearing pack through the inlet, also the oil inlet holes do not match up with the oil grooves on the bearing pack on the 35's. This causes the bearing pack to run dry over time and create a greater friction between surfaces. Unfortunatly because it is getting some sort of oil supply garrett will not take this as a warranty claim. Ball bearing packs dont need much oil compared to journal bearing turbo's but they still need a consistant flow/adequate supply. take the oil inlet supply off and check the top of the inlet on the bearing housing if its covered with carbon/burnt oil then you have a problem. Hope this helps. pm if you want some more info.

Posted 14/12/10 11:14 AM Share Posted 14/12/10 11:14 AM Unfortunatly the oil inlet is a very small hole 1- 1.5mm, So is there anything to be gained or lost by enlarging the hole a little bit? say, 2mm or so? Jez89 Donating Members 30 Member For: 14y 5m 15d Posted 14/12/10 08:44 PM Author Share Posted 14/12/10 08:44 PM Hey guys,Been a bit busy/slack getting the turbo off. Only had a crack at it last night. Just gotta disconnect bottom oil line and one bolt off the turbo and I'l have it off tonight. I'l check it out and post up tomorrow what I find. I'm probably going to end up getting a brand new core. Been priced $1300 to send it away, get a brand new garrett core fitted to my housing (hopefully my housing is fine) with a warranty. Does this sound right?

I found it had been rubbing on the exhaust housing. It didn't feel too bad and only sounded rough when slowing down after I turned the car off.I ended up needing a complete turbo, housings and all.Hope yours fairs better.
