The best gear to use is a gear that has a ratio closest to 1:1. Manual selection of this gear in an auto is required to stop the transmission up shifting while doing the power run.

Simon at XFT said they use 3rd on the ZF as 4th gets to far too high a road speed and starts climbing up the dyno. As said above I see 3rd a lot on other dynos too for the 6 speed auto.

Does gear selection alter the final readings?

It will alter the torque output, but not the power.

We use 3rd gear in the 4 speed and for the ZF we use 4th.

We have found that these cars will make more power in a 3rd gear run on the ZF when the car is not pushing big power.

Some dyno operators will use 3rd gear on the ZF as their dyno may not have a fast enough road speed to run the ZF in 4th

On manuals we use 4th gear as that is 1:1
