Nissan to recall top models

October 31, 2003 - 1:55PM

Nissan Australia was today battling to cope with the recall of two of its most popular models after its Japanese parent company advised the vehicles had an engine defect.

More than one million current model Pulsar sedans and X-Trail four-wheel drives were being taken off the road worldwide.

Nissan Australia spokeswoman Lenore Fletcher said it was not known exactly how many Australian vehicles would be affected but the company expected to have a clearer idea by the end of this weekend.

"There will be substantial numbers," Ms Fletcher said from the company's Australian headquarters in Melbourne.

"They are very popular selling vehicles. It's a bit of a pain."

Ms Fletcher said the Nissan Motor Company, Japan's third largest car maker, had yesterday advised a sensor in the engine of the vehicles could stall the engine or stop it from starting when the driver first got into the vehicle.

"But we've had no reports of accidents or incidents in Australia or anywhere else," Ms Fletcher said.

Replacement of the sensor would take less than an hour to fix, she said.

"We'll be doing everything we can to replace the parts as quickly as possible," she said.

Nissan Australia expected to be able to notify owners of Pulsars and X-Trails of the recall by the end of November, Ms Fletcher said.
