Hey guys, just a little background first. My car is an 06 BF XR6 turbo, 6sp auto, around 60,000kms on the clock, and always used BP Ultimate since I bought it with 50,000kms on it. Only mods are blue power cold air intake, and centre muffler removed.

Now to my question, I've had my centre muffler removed for a while now, but I only recently decided to give it some revvs in neutral on my drive way. I gave it some good throttle, maybe up to 3500rpm, but on the engine dropping revvs back down, it let out some HUGE and very loud popping noises, which scared me hehe. I'm used to the 'burbling' effect it gives when de-accelerating in gear while driving, and I expected a similar noise when stationary, but not this loud popping noise!

I've watched some youtube videos of people free revving their cars and none of them seem to pop like mine, they all just 'burble' down. Is there something I should check out in my exhaust system? Loose bolts somewhere?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My turbo starion would do this with its 3 inch exhaust when the dump pipe bolts came loose and air could get inbetween exhaust housing and dump.

Have a look if all the bolts at the joins are tight.

The popping noise is the unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust, The cure is to get the car tuned and adjust the overrun mixtures.

Thanks a lot for all the info guys, really appreciated! Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm good with the valve springs, but I'm also not looking at doing any crazy power mods anyway. My final product that I'd be absolutely happy with would be BluePower CAI, replace straight through exhaust pipes with hot dogs (centre muffler already gone), and a custom tune. I'm really only looking at wanted 250 - 260rwkw... You guys think that is feasible?

260rwkw is quite feasible in my opinion, not everyone needs 350rwkw+ lol, but yeah have had mine tuned for over a year and it runs well.

It might be a good idea to get injectors as well just for better fuel delivery, and scope to upgrade. :bangcomputer:

Sure will mate. Just been busy with work. But I'm going to put my car up on my ramps and check all the connections from the headers -> turbo -> dump pipe -> cat. Hopefully all it is, is just a loose screw somewhere. I bought a torque wrench a while ago specifically for things like this
