I drive to the city from Werribee each day - which means today I spent an extra 75 minutes in the car thanks to some douchebag truck driver that thought he'd fit under a bridge but thought wrong.

After 2+ hours on the road, in the last 5 minutes of the trip (near where Flinders St meets Wurundjeri Way) this happened:

A guy in a car squeezes into one of the 2 right hand turning lanes, in front of a truck. The car ends up to my left, fairly close to me. There was no cutting off or hard braking on the truck's part, but perhaps the truckie was in the same traffic I was (and/or speeding off his nut) and wasn't happy. So the truckie gets out and opens the guy's door, drags him out (fairly gently) and words are exchanged. No fists are thrown.

The car had obviously left his handbrake off because the truckie pushed the car and it moved. As the door was still open I thought perhaps it had hit my car but wasn't sure. After it had all finished I asked the guy if it had hit mine and he said he didn't think so.

I wasn't about to get out and check as the traffic was horrendous, and I'm the type that won his last fight by 50 metres.

I get to the car park and have a quick look (I'm over an hour late by this point). It looks like there's a little something there, maybe a small dint, or maybe something that will come out with a cut and polish. I know feck all about cars so I really don't know what I'm looking at!

I managed to get the guy's rego number and text it to myself - what do I do now? Do I contact my insurer and provide the details, do I get someone to look at my car and tell me what the ACTUAL damage is...???

Never been in this situation before so advice appreciated! What a great start to the day.

Yep, just call your insurer.

Provided they can track down the culprit it'll cost you nothing and won't be on your claims history, but if they cannot contact the other driver or collaborate your story then you would have to cop the excess etc.

Or otherwise if you'd rather just sort it out with minimum fuss maybe try a dent removal mob if it's only minor and there's no paint missing.

Dent removal guys can work wonders, seen some of there jobs at caryards. Think there's a mob called touchupguys.com

If that doesn't work call your insurer. But for the time tll take sorting out a claim ild just pay the $100 odd bucks.

If it's only $100 I can live with it, although I'd still be sh*tty just on principle

if its just a dint, ring a dent company and they will pull it out easy, if its just a scuff/scratch it can be buffed out. dont bother going through all the hazzel with insurance, only if its really bad. chuck up a good quality pic or two and we will be able to tell ya what path to take.
