With summer just around the corner, I had to bust out the aircon today, and I got thinking.

How much would airconditiong affect performance and fuel? Does running the compressor on the coldest setting with the fan on low, sap the same performance/fuel as running the compresser on the same coldest setting, but running the fan on the highest?

Ive wondered this too. Im a windows man anyway so aircon is only on in extreme heat or when passengers want it on.

My guess would be maybe 5% to maybe almost 10% power loss, definately noticable.

When the compressor is on its on, no matter what setting you use. I leave mine on auto 22.5 all year around.

On cruise control and level road, with instant fuel consumption displayed, switch A/C on and note any difference.

There isn't a lot of difference to worry about.

Fan speed would not make any measurable increase.

Be Cool.
