Had the 50th Anniversary for a couple of months now, so I decided to give it a first polish. Due to work this is the first chance apart from the occassional wash.

Washed then chamois and kept in the shade.

Looked inot what polishes I had on the shaelf. 2 x 1/4 bottles that's all. Why not treat the car to some new polish. Had someone drive me to Autobarn where I bought Maqguires Gen 2 polish wax paste on the advice of the salesman.

Back home read the instruction. Applied a small amount to the bonnet and let it dry. Started to buff it off and ended up with residue (looked like) spots all over. Applied a 2nd coat smae thing this time it was possible to see the direction marks from my buffing.

Looked like crap. Got out the old polish (turtle) gave another coat, things looked better. Well thinking Maqguires is suppose to be great stuff I did the bonnet again. It was now better but still not perfect.

Decided to take the can back for a full refund, as it states on the box. Autobarn were not to happy as they had heard of great results. They phoned Maqguires sales Rep and I spoke to him. He asssured me that the Maqguires cars are Black FG's and they come up gleeming. We discussed my methord and he decided I should have first used a paint cleaner.

After that I gave the phone to the salesman, he spoke further to the Rep. Then went a got micro cloths, pads and paint cleaner for me. This is what you need and gave me what he had collected.

Back at the home I used the paint cleaner first on the bonnet, WOW amazing, what a difference. Then a coat of polish wax and that made it fantastic. The paint cleaner was the answer. So I finished the car, best shine ever.

I guess thinking back I should have used a paint cleaner, first because I am in an area prone to industrial fallout and second because it was the cars first polish.

hey colin, congrats on the new 50th turbo :icon_ford:

personally, I use the megs quick clay kit to get rid of the impurities in the paint then I hit it with the mothers california gold step 2 sealer /glaze then step 3 carnauba wax

have a read of this detailers guide forum its awesome for info on this kinda stuff and best of all these guys do it as their trade

Detailing Clay : Starters' Guide - Detailing World

even if you didn't live in a place prone to industrial fallout, I still reckon it's best to use clay or some sort of paint cleaner to get rid of the impurities stuck to the paint. best way to get that mirror finish you're after

using the two bucket wash system and microfibre cloth chamois also helps out a lot so scratches are minimised during washing

Thats the worst part about the meguiars gear, I use the three step stuff and its three times round the bloody car everytime you want to give it a shine.

yeah I know detailing a car isn't easy, fgs are big cars to work on

I washed my car yesterday, started on the mothers step 1 pre wax prep and that stuff just doesn't come off easy. took 3 hours just to get step 1 off properly, that's with my girlfriend helping as well. the dust is so fine it gets into every crack

the megs quick clay isn't any better either, usually an entire day job

well worth it though, glad step 1 is only needed once a year

I used to think detailing the XR was a long job, until I started making the Landcruiser spotless everytime I took it out for a play. Falcon = tiny and easy to clean :)

I used to love meguiars, but have moved onto Auto Glym. So easy to use, paint is silky smooth and very shiny. The Landcruiser is 14yrs old and the paint looks and feels better than a brand new vehicles paint! Its all about the same price too. The Wheel Shine is second to none aswell, muddy tyres come up looking brand new with a quick spray.

Glymm waxes and Fareclla polishes. buttrock.gif

I do use the maguires gold wax when I can't get the Glymm's. It shines well. The Glymm stay on better in the QLD sun.

I do mine every three months. First thing I do is soak it in truck wash in the sun. Yeah drastic I know. But I am trying to get all the old crappy wax off it. And when it's good and warm in the sun I gurney the crap out of it with my 4 series karacha.

Then clay bar the oxidents out of it. A mild buff with G10 or a hand buff with G3, then G10. Then 3 coats of wax. One is never enough. The more wax the more protection. But it wont go on thick so u have to do it in many layers.

About 8 hours work.

In between polishes. I gurney it and soap it up and gurney it and chamios it off. Two micro fiber mitts and one bucket. Soap comes through the gurney. Water and metho with an old T shirt for the windows and a mild nice smelling wool wash for the interior.
