My old VY had a FAR better paint finish in terms of resistance to damage of any kind.It is getting to the stage where I am seriously considering a respray! The finish is so weak that the slightest thing causes scratches and the surface is all "wobbly" when you look at the reflections (dont know the name for this). To cut a long story short after owning the car for only a year and a half and having it always garaged and washed with as good a quality gear that I can give it in my busy schedule (and yes it has gone to cafe car washes at times but hey so have all my cars and none of them have suffered) it is looking shocking with scratches all over it, swirles, chips etc etc.How is everyone else's paint jobs on their FG's holding up?I think it may be time for a trip out to FORD to see if I can get some kind of help from them. I've seen the effect on BMW's and other more expensive marques. Saw a Bentley which was fine though I think it's the side effect of automated painting assembly lines? Posted 13/11/10 10:28 AM Share Posted 13/11/10 10:28 AM (edited) Yes it is Orange peel. Its fairly annoying but its a good thing. If you have a completely smooth surface then it will show absolutely every imperfection in the panels like sanding marks on the metal and dimples. Anyone who watches Natgeo and Mega Factories just compare the Ferrari manufacturing process to the Camero will see the difference in care the cars going through the assembly line get.As for the paint quality its actually pretty good, has quite a hard clear coat. Compare that to Subarus and Hondas that will scratch is you give it a sideways glance. Paint thickness is on par with all other manufactures for the price. How are you Washing it? Cafe wash places are not a good idea either. Edited 13/11/10 10:38 AM by Rancidpunx

You can get the finish better without having to go all out on a full respray.

It was originally for when a paint surface wasnt finished properly (polished/flattened etc) and/or when a car was repainted but a reaction happened between old paint and new... other things happened like crazing(ZIG ZAG HAIRLINE CRACKS)cars are now water based ECO paints unlike cars from way back that were acrylic enamel and much tougher/heavier finish! so yeah, all modern cars in the ecenomy end of the paint finishes(ford/holde/toyota/subaru etc etc) will all have this ripple effect of finish... gone are the days of extremely high gloss hard as nails paints.....unless you haver an old car that warrants an old skool job but its all to do with controlled chemicals now, they're considered a huge eco danger so now all water based safe paints.....wgich arent as tough/resiliant !also...the more effort you put into the surface before painting, the better the result after ! new factories limit this due to time and costs.. Posted 14/11/10 01:30 AM Share Posted 14/11/10 01:30 AM This is a cross section of my ute in Nitro. Some dippy bitch opened her door on to the tub (although her insurance took car of it)Clear and colour coat with the primer visable below then through that to the bare metal. Gives you a view of the paint thickness. Not had any issues with mine stone chipping, although my V8 bonnet does but that was resprayed.
