So, I'm sitting at home watching the cricket and thinking about all things IPL and how the Veyron has just been released for the Indian market.

All that indicates there must be a fair few Indian's doing well for themselves (given that its been released there and not in WA which according to recent rich lists has 30 or so people worth 100M or more with plenty worth 25M+) and then I stumble on this link which brings reality back to light. I've seen plenty of photo's from India and surrounding area's and while it doesn't look all that flash, it certainly didn't look as bad as this.

I've traveled a little and have seen some rather disturbing things but some of these are truely horrifying. Makes me wonder WTF is going wrong considering you have a bunch of billionaires paying crickets huge money to play for them. Having never been to India (I will one day), has anyone been and been faced with sights like these?

I truly had trouble keeping my breakfast down. It is amazingly disgusting what they do to turn the Ganges from the cleanest water where it begins from a glacier, to the most filthy water known to man.

It is sad that people live like this and that the Indian government does nothing to try to change anything.

But it is easy to say they should do something about it but I am sure the logistics of doing anything would be almost impossible as the river is so long that it would be impossible to monitor and culturally their people feel its theirs to do what they want.

It will take a massive cultural shift and education campaign which would take a lot of planning, effort and committment from successive governments which I doubt they have the will or means to undertake.

This also shows me that everybody has a different perspective on what is normal as everybody has a different "point of reference". Our version of "normal" is these peoples version of paradise. Normal is only based on your experience and their idea of "normal" is very different to ours.

When you feel like complaining about your lot in life, just refer to the above link and you will feel much better about your predicament!!! This is very sad indeed.

Whilst there are a lot of wealthy ppl, there are so many that are poverty stricken that even taking the money from the rich and distributing it around would not solve the problem as it would not go far. This does not necessarily mean its OK for some to live like princes and others to live like swine, but there needs to be a general shift in what the whole country feels are minimum standards and a general effort across the board to change what they do/how they do it etc.

Even when other countries are poor, they dont dump the dead, destroy their water supply, dump their crap everywhere etc. Its a cultural thing that is based on what they basically feel is acceptable. Throwing money at the issue will not change anything in a meaningful way, changing behaviour and their own thoughts on basic standards and respect for their fellow man will do more to change this. EDUCATION IS ONE OF THE KEY SOLUTIONS.

Money is part of the problem but it's the Indian psyche and lack of education that is the key problem. that's not to say all Indians are like this but enough to create this problem.

Reminds me of seeing Shocking Asia when I was a teenager.

Not much you can do now with it being so overpopulated and all.

Besides castrating 9 out of 10 males how could you get the population back to anything remotely

controllable?

It's a real wakeup call to see how some survive in countries like this.....

Rampant poverty, disease, customs that go back thousands of years......

But hey......they've got nuclear weapons .....go figure

Have been to India a couple of times.... and it truly is a country that embraces the word "dichotomy" sooooo well. Fly to Mumbai, get off the plane and go out into the slums. The smell overpowers you, the sights add insult to that already raw wound, and your whole being is insulted from the sensual conflict. Then you jump a car to Agra, and on the way out of town see the upmarket homes and cars, and then four hours later the Taj Mahal.... oppulence and beauty personified. And ten minutes after leaving see a man squatting in the middle of a bare field taking a cr@p. Challenge yourself - go there some time.... I loved it so much I went back.

hnmm not nice , but from most of what I saw it's individually up to each person there to change this ,but how do you get a billion people to change their habits

My Sis went for a holiday there, couldn't believe how many dead people she saw. Dead tied to roofs of cars, floating in the river etc. The smells she said are indescribable. And she went 5 day only drinking bottled water out of fear.
