just an old mechanics trick for locating a noise ! I put my thumb between the screw driver and my ear or a bit of rag as it can be loud in my wee sensitive ears ! you will still hear the difference and locate the offending tappet , its easy now as wifes a nurse and I steal her stethy !:icon_ford: !

In regard to the rod issue...I know from my brothers car that his ticking noise wasnt that loud and the car seemed to drive normally...actually drove it around for weeks with this slight ticking noise until he gave it a hit one day and punched a hole out the side of the block...Though the noise was there from idle and throughout the rev range...

Also sometimes even a bottom end bearing on its way out can cause the ticking...and this can get even louder at a certain rev range...

Though these scenarios are unlikely unless you have meddled with the car or its pinged etc... or have had instances of low oil pressure etc...

boost69 mine is a tapping noise, when cold not there. went to mechanic near work and he said if it was a bent rod it would make a noise right from start up and won't go away. he had a quick look and said its from the top under rocker cover somewhere. mechanic said like ratter said if it was a rod it would be a deep knock sound not a tap that goes away when revs increase. will change oil this weekend a see how it goes.

Yeah from what you have described it doesnt sound like a rod as I do distinctly remember my brothers car had the taping noise consistently...I agree that it could be your oil...you have nothing to lose by changing it

rod will knock and after a spirited drive will either exit the block or get so loud you go deaf or just drop power really badly, mine done the last with the small end going and the first when the bottom end went ! big hole, loads of smoke and a dead motor ! :bopp: , I said to the mate(after I flogged an SLK Kompressor) that tappets getting loud ! :roflmbo: shortly later we were enjoying a beer awaiting a tow truck ! :omg:

rab put screwdriver trick right at the front on top of rocker cover, where the cam chains are and that's the same noise as I hear excatly the same, so im hoping that's it, so hoping oil change will help it. they sound like there loose in there.

could also be cam chain needing tightened a little but I'd hedge my bets on a fresh oil change and a little drive for 10 mins followed by a bootfull ! :beerchug:

* disclaimer, this advice is neither warranted for mechanical guarantee nor performance gains !*

Could it also be a noisy lifter??

What about an engine oil flush like the one Nulon make. Could work
