I put my thumb between the screw driver and my ear or a bit of rag as it can be loud in my wee sensitive ears ! you will still hear the difference and locate the offending tappet , its easy now as wifes a nurse and I steal her stethy ! ! boost69 Donating Members 737 Member For: 19y 6m 11d Posted 03/11/10 10:31 PM Share Posted 03/11/10 10:31 PM In regard to the rod issue...I know from my brothers car that his ticking noise wasnt that loud and the car seemed to drive normally...actually drove it around for weeks with this slight ticking noise until he gave it a hit one day and punched a hole out the side of the block...Though the noise was there from idle and throughout the rev range...Also sometimes even a bottom end bearing on its way out can cause the ticking...and this can get even louder at a certain rev range...Though these scenarios are unlikely unless you have meddled with the car or its pinged etc... or have had instances of low oil pressure etc... Pazzo Donating Members 11,132 Member For: 14y 1m 8d Gender: Male Posted 04/11/10 05:20 AM Author Share Posted 04/11/10 05:20 AM boost69 mine is a tapping noise,when cold not there. went to mechanic near work and he said if it was a bent rod it would make a noise right from start up and won't go away. he had a quick look and said its from the top under rocker cover somewhere. mechanic said like ratter said if it was a rod it would be a deep knock sound not a tap that goes away when revs increase. will change oil this weekend a see how it goes.
