T5 Rebuild

Ok, I don't really believe all this hype about the T5 being so weak etc. Personally, I reckon it may be a bit of a conspiracy theory by Ford to scare people from going mod crazy on the XRT. Then again, I certainly am no expert.

So anyway, for all you who are experts....what do you think is the realistic lifespan of the T5 with the engine running between 330-360fwkw. What do you think its lifespan would be without mods?

Perhaps (once again no expert) 180-220 000km's no mods? Maybe less?

Running 330-360kw, maybe 50 000km?

Secondly...What exactly will happen when the gearbox finally does decide to let go? Will it just not engage gears? Will it physically blow up? Could it cause any damage to the rest of the car? Would it happen straight away or slowly degrade over time?

What is the effect of adding a short shifter (ie, Herrod Sureshift) on the durability of the gearbox? Any change?

And finally....Assuming it does all go pear shaped, how much would it cost to have it rebuilt? Sure, prevention is better than cure, however if its gonna cost around $8000 for a six speed, and the rebuilding a T5 every 50 000km is much cheaper, mayber this is an option? Particularly if a short shifter can clean up the quality a bit as well.

Cheers,

Chris

My ute is putting out 350hp ATW and let me tell you my 'box is making noises already. However, on the up side, the noises (touch wood - and touches head) have not seemed to be getting worse and I don't muck around when up it..... :)

It depends on how you drive, I reckon the gearbox would deteriorate gradually. Unlikely to damage the rest of the car unless maybe it seized locking the rear wheels.

There was an intreresting letter to the Editor in the latest Motor? magazine (the one with GT vs Clubbie) where some guy wrote in with his calculation as to how the extra power of modded XR6Ts will affect the gearbox longevity. I haven't got the magazine handy, maybe someone else who has can scan it or type it out.

Yeh, I know the letter. Was from Neil Dodermaide, TAYSER Pty Ltd. In summary:

"The real issue of driveline durability is duty cycles (stress X time)......not a matter of if they will fail (automotive coponents) but when....The trans may handle, say 700nm once and break the second time you try it...The highest stress on a driveline is when the vehicle is fully laden and at maximum towing capacity....a 300kw XR6T will have about 570nm, and if its duty cycle is relatively low load, you could expect its trans to last about 60 percent of the life of the stock one...other issues that may affect trans life is the fluid temperature under continuos higher loads and clutch and brake slip if higher torque is not compensated for with revised valving or calibration".

So, the question is then, what is the life of a stock one? And, if we could expect it to last about 60% with 300kw, what about 330-360kw (incidently, APS Phase II & III).

When it goes, it will generally be either a stripped 3rd gear, (mainshaft, and or cluster), or a stripped input drive. It may lock the rear wheels, or the engine. The big if is manufacturing variables. Some people will have good lifespan with big hp, others will have shorter lifespan with less. There is no magic number that any one unit will survive long term.

OUCH!!! :crazystuff: This isn't likely to just happen out of the blue though is it? I'm guessing there would be a fair bit of warning so that it could be fixed before this happend? Imagine doing a 100km/h then the bloody rear wheels lock up!

Sadly no. When they go, they normally shear teeth off right at the root and go bang, rather than chipping them and getting noisy first.

Completely agree with WBT56. On a stocky turbo the trans will last forever but once you put 400 plus whp it fatigues the gears and they just let go without warning. With the turbos it will be third gear because the turbo has heaps of torque. If you like to play just on the dyno (not drags) with a modified turbo, do power runs in 4th as its direct drive. This will take 1000+whp with no problems. With over 500whp in a turbo 6 I love taking off in 4th and when boost hits its wild. You really feel what torque is all about. Nevertheless I'm surprised no-one has blown the Turbo T5 as yet or the auto.

How likely is this ? I'm guessing a T56 is the best solution here ?

The likelyhood is high. WHEN is the big factor. These boxes have the same internals as an AU XR8. Some of these have run a blower for quite some time and survived, others have gone bang behind a stock engine. As a TR3650 from the V8 and the 5 speed Tremecs won't fit, a T56 is the only logical upgrade.
