Dankman you are right on the shutting down of the cyl same as on the au,s.

As for belt replacement it should only take 1/2 hour at most to do it only requires the fans to be removed and the self adjusting pulley moved and it is off.

We have done 30000 km no belt or o,ring problem yet.

But have had leaking rad replaced.

:D I have my car back and all is good! :D

They believe that one of the pulleys had a sharp edge and was gradually cutting through the fan belt. They replaced the belt, 3 pulleys, the water pump seal & gasket (o-ring leaking). They also topped up the coolant. Grand total of $0.00 for me. :smilielol:

As for the shutting down of cylinders in the engine, that's what I meant by "limp home mode".

The sales men from both Hillis and Biti Motors said that the fanbelt should be a piece of cake to fix and that the roadside guys should have spares and be able to fit it on the spot?

I never had any roadside service guys come out, just the tow truck.

Were you able to find the belt to help work out what caused it to fail? Have you seen any evidence of the belt-shredding problem? That bloody belt is a concern because of the no of things it drives and the shredding rubber issue.

The belt was still there, just hanging though, rather than being around the pulleys. You're spot on as the belt was shredded.

I had the 3 thou service done a week back (I forgot all about it I was at 5900k's when I got back from bathurst) and had very little coolant left when I got to the dealer, the 'O' ring problem they said and set about replacing it on the spot, on a saturday of all days too (well done Biti Motors)

They said that if you run out of coolant that the motor starts to shut down cylenders progressively. By that, I mean it dosent fire the injector or spark plug in random cylenders to get air through them in order to cool the motor. So at first it's only one cylender then 2 and so on till 4 cyl's then the motor shuts down completely. Only way to move it is to start the engine again and it will give you 30 seconds to move the car incase your in a really bad spot eg stopped in the middle of railway tracks.

So the progressive shutdown could account for the very rough running of the car. They said under normal circumstances I prolly would have cooked the motor, but the afore mentioned 'I want to live mode' kicked in and saved the motor.

that's how I understood it..... any other ford guys want to elaborate?

Your pretty much right on that one! It has a sensor in the back of the head that measures the metal temp rather than the collant to tell the system what to do!

we hit a roo in a company car the other day about 20kms from no where! Pushed the radiator fans into the belt and stuffed the pulleys! Had to drive home somehow so we kept going! That failsafe cooling is awesome! Cutting cylinders to keep it running! Sounded sick but was able to do 80km/h with no water! Next day, fixed the pulleys and belt the next day. started it up and all good! best new feature on a car in ages!
