Ask them to drain it and see if it's got close to 5L in it.If it hasn't, it needs 4.85L as per the workshop manual.Mine made a similar noise for ages until I was made aware that the oil capacity was required to be 4.85L for the I6.Since filling it with the correct quantity, no more noise. Edit: see here for more detail. http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=70893 Edited 20/10/10 01:40 PM by PHANTMXR6
BCR01 Member 152 Member For: 14y 7m 16d Posted 20/10/10 09:44 PM Share Posted 20/10/10 09:44 PM Is the Tremec, not the same as 99% of manual trans, where you fill the oil to till it starts coming out the fill hole?? This make is easy to know if you have the right amount of oil.IMO, you should not have to worry about changing the oil, in a new car, with a new transmition. If you are concerned maybe Mal Wood could shed some light on this. He is a site sponcer too!

Member 1,742 Member For: 16y 9m 13d Gender: Male Location: Earth Posted 20/10/10 10:24 PM Share Posted 20/10/10 10:24 PM No, it's not the same as 99% of all manual transmissions. In the workshop manual there is a specific fill procedure where you don't even use the fill plug. You have to fill the box with a measured amount of oil through the reverse switch hole. The I6 is 4.85L and the v8 3.85L. Why this is so, is not something I cna answer, but it is in black and white on the workshop manual page number I quoted in the other thread. The funny thing is, in the manual there are heaps of photos of someone disassembling a transmission using a rattle gun. There is a special note from Ford saying they do not endorse the use of air tools for this task and the pictures are from the manufacturer of the transmission and used for illustration purposes. I am a Qualified Mechainc, but not on the tools now, seems if you snooze, you get left behind! I gotta say why car manafacturers make it so complex is beyond me. "Fill till the oil comes out" worked fine for 80 years!Having said that, I have worked auto cars that have had VERY pacific ways of checking oil. No more KISS for cars! (KISS= Keep It Simple Stupid!) Fill through the reverse switch hole......what rubbish from the design team at Tremec, particularly after leaving a usual fill plug there. Changing the case mould to do it properly is not that hard. FAIL.Sounds to me like a post design in situ "fix" to save their bacon. Edited 22/10/10 10:38 AM by Smoke them tyres

Think it was either 10 or 25mm cant remember off top of head. But as stated earlier it is a quantity of 4.85 for the I6. I wonder if the fill hole is useful for a different vehicle when the trans might be in a funny angle.

Otherwise I will bring it back and have them drain the oil and check it....Though I can just imaging the way that that conversation will go:Me: I would like you to check the oil level in the gearboxford: OKcome back to pick up car....me: did you check oil levelford: yes:me: what was it?ford: OKme: so if I check it myself will be OKford: surewhen I get home:Drain oil and find that it is low.....at this point I am sure that Ford will not pay for the replacement oil!!!
