-Don't use any Ezy Out. They are usually brittle and snap.....then you're really stuffed. The best ones to get are ones that are splined like a car axle along their entire length that have a matching "nut" that you put your spanner or socket on. They have some flex and give, rather than snap. Hammer it in and go to work. Good tool shops should have this better style unit. They're not dear.....

Thanks smoke, I've heard plenty of bad things about the ezyouts, just didn't realise there was an alternative out there.

I'll hunt one of these things down

No problem at all...very happy to help.

Don't know how the Ezy Outs have survived so long in the market when they are so hopeless. They have been unchanged at least for the last 30 years....any of those spiral ones are trouble.

If this splined type can't get it out, a further option is to remove the tail housing and EDM it (Electrode Discharge). This is like a small thin electrode that arcs the broken bolt away, but I suppose if it gets to that stage, a new housing may be more economical.

well I was just quoted $500 bucks for that kit you posted a pic of...

I've found this:

http://sidchrome.com.au/product/7287/turnout-stud-extractor-kit

which is $160.

Do you know of any other splined ones?

I may just take my chances with an easyout, I just cant justify spending that much...

$500, that's absolutely flamin' ridiculous :buttrock:

Stupid price, because they will sell NONE at that level.

Who quoted that price if I may ask?

Have you spoken to anyone other than them?

I would buy the size you need rather than a set (although a set would be nice).

I would have thought that one of the following:

-Snapon guy

-bolt supply businesses

-reputable tool supplier

-aviation tool supplier

would have them, but I'll see over the next few days who else might have them.

Another option may be to get some Torx stuff and go to work on it......post-13888-128801719128.jpg

I'm not saying it's "engineeringly perfect", but thinking laterally, it uses the same splined method and may get you out of trouble. The hole would still need to be drilled, and the parts would be somewhat sacrificial.

I would still try this before an Ezy out. The screwdriver type option would need some wrench flats on it to be effective, and if the broken bolt is deep in the hole, this may be the only option to reach it.

Keep the parts square and don't let them wander from the bolt centreline.

Don't use any more interference than necessary. The remainder of the bolt does not need to be expanded in the hole (thread drag).

Good luck. I'll still pursue the above.

On the rothenberger website it says reese is one of their distributors so I called em and $500 was the price, I just laughed at the guy.

I've ordered the sidchrome set, getting a discount through a mate so it shouldn't be too bad,

I gather when Sidchrome says "fluted", they mean splined????? If so, they will do the business.

The metal spec appears to be a chrome moly variant....an excellent choice.

That price is what it should be and being available individually is also as it should be.
